The most important step is to acknowldge that you might be sick and need professional help.
The road to recovery might be long and hard but it is worth it. Just think of how things can be or how they used to be.

Thanks for bringing this up. Depression is a really significant issue, and many people do not understand it, simply thinking it means feeling sad. Even people like me who are merely symptomatic and not negatively impacted can benefit by understanding the condition and doing some research. There are many ways to fight back, but understanding you are not alone is important!

This is true. It's also important to differ between a winter depression and a real long-term one. There are bio-chemical processes involved that make it a serious disease and some people use that term loosely.

I'm not sure seasonal depression and long term depression are inherently that different; both can be caused by the same processes, and although they are functionally quite different, neither should be taken lightly.

I googled a little and just realized that seasonal depression is an official disease now. I've been misled by the popular misuse of the term it seems. Now I know more.

It's a pretty common misconception, especially since a lot of people who complain about seasonal depression really just don't like that season instead of having a disorder triggered by that season. I grew up in a place with no meaningful difference between seasons, but I always found summer to be exacerbating because I had more free time to sort of wallow. That said, I don't think my condition was seasonal, just that it was exacerbated by circumstances unique to that season.

That's exactly why I haven't taken it seriously until now. Depression is generally misused, which it shouldn't be.
Same here, but not for the same reasons I guess. I just love winter because I like the cold more than the heat and there is nothing more beautiful than a snowy forest at night which is almost bright as day when the moonshine illuminates the snow.
Summer on the other hand is just hot and sweaty.

Won't share where I've been or am now, but believe me that there is a point beyond misery that can't be self-medicated. This is for the people that might be there right now since the thread is about raising awareness and helping out.

It's only taken me 16 years to acknowledge the problem.
If anything acknowledgment has changed me for the better despite all the more problems it raises.

I agree but in some cases they don't even have anyone they trust anymore.
Every case of depression has another story, but if someone happens to have a good friend he can trust, then talking about it would be the first step.

You might be right, but considering it is sometimes lethal and has characteristics of a disease I wouldn't call it that.
If you're familiar with Depression and its biochemical aspect, then you know that it is caused by stress or trauma in extreme cases causing certain messengers in the brain like serotonin to stop flowing which cause the disability to feel happiness or the things alike. Just like you can get a cold when you expose yourself to coldness causing your immune system to lose strength and open up for viruses and bacteria.
