Thank you for the wonderful (and wishlisted) GA! I did check out your review of Death's Door, and although I am usually not into action-based games, it does look very lovely indeed. And your review gave me some insights into why I might end up buying this little gem despite my turn-based genes. :D

Aw, thanks for checking it out :) Glad to hear it sparked your interest in the game! I could use some of those turn-based genes of yours. Excluding roguelike deckbuilders, I have yet to find a turn-based game I really enjoy ^^’ Good luck with the giveaway!

Admittedly, they were always present for me as I like slower paced, analytical approaches to games. But with age the tendency towards turn-based games increases, as it allows you to simply walk away from it, brew a nice cup of coffee, browse the internet for "that thing you wanted to look up but always forgot to" and then continue with the previously alt-tabbed game in peace, slurping that black brew.

Also, I find it vital that the entire world built around that game feels authentic and well polished. Even then, there are some "worlds" that I don't feel comfortable in, be it because of the underlying theme, the graphics or the backstory. Then of course it goes on: Is it team-based, perma-death, dynamic, open-world, does your character/team develop over the game based on your decisions and skill,...

But I can guarantee, once you find one that works for you, you will fall in love with it. Imagine a game with Death's Door's charm and graphics in a turn-based setting of your preference.

You might be right about that age thing. What you described does sound very cozy and relaxing, but I want fast-paced, completely immersive action without interruptions :D Or survival/crafting with a fascinating world and story to explore. I don’t want to have to pause, analyze and think. So yeah, right now, turn-based combat always puts me off. I tried Xcom and Wasteland 2 and enjoyed the settings, but I didn’t like the combat at all. I’m very interested in Civ, but I just don’t see myself learning how to play it anytime soon and with all the games I want to play, I can hardly ever spend more than 40 hours in a single game anyway ^^’ I do hope you’re right and I will one day find one that works for me! What's your favorite one?

My favourite... oh my. I would have to say Jagged Alliance (the very first one). It was set in a realistic environment with squads (and members with whom you will bond over time) and a persistent world. Actions and consequences seemed logical and you could get immersed in the game.

Of course, the graphics and - more importantly - the UI haven't aged well, so this one is hard getting into again, even for me. :P

I haven't found a game yet that could stand up to JA, and the combination of the parameters described above are rare to find, let alone well executed.

But some newer games that peaked my interest are Battle Brothers (a game that has me caring about my virtual brothers in arms), Wildermyth (which has a unique charm) and Banners of Ruin (which is one of the very few card-battle games that seem to do everything right and simply got me hooked within the first hour).
