I really don't understand why people forget to do that, it's an minimum effort anyway after reaching back to the giver to even say "THANK YOU" for giving me a free game. Right?
When I get to win a game, which doesn't happen all the the time, I get to have the tab opened. I Redeem it through Steam, check my Library to make sure the game is there, then I head back to the post, and click received. I normally say thank you before I redeem it. I think it's the right thing to do and if the giver didn't send the code as of yet, it's a great reminder that I acknowledged that I won the game.
