It only seems to warn you if you already own the game unfortunately; I entered for the Deus Ex HR DLC not realising I'd bought some deal that included it. I too thought it would stop me from entering if I owned it.
Weirdly, the system could tell if you didn't own the Dungeon Defenders base-game and would say "Base-game not found" or something.
The admin/mods are aware, according to a support ticket, of the DLC issues (this and some other ones) but haven't resolved them yet. You just need to check before entering if you are not sure :)
