Bonus points? How could anyone resist?
I choose to recommend Pixel Piracy. It's a 2D sandbox title in which you play the role of a pirate captain and your adventure to loot and pillage other boats. You can design your own ship (block by block, a la Terraria), choose which skills to teach your crew, catch animals to keep as pets/cannon fodder, and so on.

While it still has a number of technical issues to work out, it's definitely worth looking at if you enjoy going at your own pace in an open world.
