I used to hate the idea of letting my friends know what I wanted, because I've been bought games before with no time to really play them, and I only get things on sale (unless they're gifts and I really like the dev). I viewed it like Amazon's wishlist, and didn't want friends actually buying me anything until I killed my then tiny 200-game backlog.
Then I got over it and went from 0 games to 600+ pretty quickly, any games I have a remote interest in go on it so I can make use of the SG wishlist page. There was no "recommended" filter before, and it's still useful to filter out the junk. I keep my wishlist pretty organized, top 10 are the only really meaningful ones to me.

Five are indie games actually, though Divinity:OS 2 is very well done, the 3 Skyrim DLCs are just never on sale, so frustrating...
