You have to wonder if he is just plain relieved now that some distance has come between the time of his departure. I'm not an artist of any sort at all, but I would imagine being forced to paint, sing, or act out the same damn thing would be soul crushing for someone that really felt they had so much more to give.

The interesting thing to me is that even though it was readily apparent that his heart was no longer behind the series; the games still managed to be as great as they all were. I never did manage to get around to IV, and only recently picked this title up for PS4. However, all the others I played (including PSP titles) were excellent games. I'm grateful that I got to play those, but conversely I wonder just what amazing things we may have missed out on from him while his hands were tied behind his back.
