I'm not sure, but it is common practice to have elaborate memorials for police officers killed in the line of duty. I would suspect an acknowledgement of his heroism in leading his killer to justice was part of that. Crazy coincidence.

Well I found the other coincidental basketball-affiliated own-murderer apprehending individual. Also solved Q1. Really thought Q3 was going to be related to either the Lost Ship of the Desert or Aral Sea (the idea of a ship in the desert seemed to match the poem well), but no such luck with those guesses.
