An oldie but a goodie. I remember playing the Wizardry series when I was a kid. W1-W5 was more or less a continuous story, but W6 started an all new story, with new races and classes, which W7 continued, so there's no need to play W1-W5 to know what's going on. W6 came out just as Windows 95 did, so it was originally a DOS game with minor Win95 support. W7 was Windows 95 only... and the (now rather dated) graphics show it. They did something with W6 and W7 that was unique and to the best of my knowledge had never been done before. W6 has 3 distinctly different possible endings. W7 has 4 uniquely different beginnings. The trick is, if you had a W6 save, you could import your characters and literally pick up where you left off based on which ending you got in W6, same characters, gear, levels, etc. If you didn't have a W6 save (whether you deleted it, or just never played it), or just didn't want to play that save, you could create a new group of characters, and it would drop you off in a region of the same world that was more or less a newbie zone.

Thanks for sharing your story and notes. My dad was a huge fan of the series (particularly Wizardry 8) when I was a kid and I never played them. Interesting how the different endings/beginnings worked! May have to check that out.

I forgot about Wizardry 8. I never got to play it, it came out so much later than 7. Heck, I never even finished 7. One of these days (sooner if I win) I'll go back and replay the entire trilogy. Apparently 7 has FOUR endings, independent of how you started (aka all beginnings can get all endings, your beginning choice only really affects your starting location and starting reputation among the different races, you can become friends or enemies with any of them regardless of past decisions). Then Wizardry 8 has FIVE beginnings, four that correspond to the ending you got in 7 plus a "new adventurers" option. Then there are three endings to 8 ... but those endings aren't based on choices throughout the game like the previous ones, you're just given a choice at the end.
Also, I was wrong ... it was 7, not 6, that came out right as Win95 did. They made some updates to it so it would run natively on Windows 95, and re-released it as Wizardry Gold (which is apparently the version you get with this collection).
