Touhou is my favorite series out of anything I've consumed for over a decade now, but I discovered it by liking the music in a video on "The Hub," so you're fine...

It comes to mean “idiot,” and is almost always “cirno.”

Cirno came to be called an idiot,
Because the safe zone for the spell card “Icicle Fall -easy-” was directly in front of Cirno.
The phrase “frontal safety zone” is sometimes used as a joke in MMD works as well.
In addition, the game manual states that 9 is an idiot and is treated as an official setting.

I didn't really play any shmups before getting into Touhou. Maybe the only one I played was Tyrian 2000, and that was long ago.
So I think new players shouldn't have any problem with Touhou, especially on the lower difficulties.
Though, this specific game is built around the bullet freezing gimmick, so it plays differently than usual Touhou games.
