I haven't done a giveaway in a while and this looked fun. I hope someone enjoys it. :)
Instead of thanks (though I don't mind that!), could I get some Sci-fi book recommendations? Stuff similar to S.T.A.L.K.E.R./Stalker/Roadside Picnic or C.J. Cherryh's work would be fantastic. Thanks!

Hmm. It's tough to find something comparable to Roadside Picnic, but I can recommend anything from Greg Egan, if you like the hard "one scientific idea forming the base of the whole story" type of sci-fi. Particularly good stories are Into Darkness, The Infinite Assassin, The Hundred-Light-Year-Diary, all in the book Axiomatic. Or you could try and pick a novel, such as Schild's Ladder.

Indeed. I suspect I'll have to sort through more Russian literature. "Hard to be a God," also by the Strugatsky brothers, looks pretty good.
I've never heard of Greg Egan but I looked up Schild's Ladder. Very interesting. I'll put him on my list. Thank you. :)

maybe Metro 2033 by Dimitry Glukhovsky or The Road by Cormack McCarthy (there is also a movie based on book)
Comment has been collapsed.
After playing the game, Metro 2033 is indeed on my list. From what I've read, it's a great deal more depressing than the game. Should be interesting.
I've heard of movie version of The Road in passing. Post-Apocalyptic, neato. On the list. Thank you. :)

Ooh, I was gonna say The Road, too!

I actually don't read much in the way of sci-fi,, sorry!
Comment has been collapsed.
Heh, that's okay. Have you heard of any good Post-Apocalyptic stuff, by any chance?
Comment has been collapsed.
The last thing I read that's post apocalyptic was I Am Legend. Much much better than the movie
Comment has been collapsed.
I've heard that the previous two movies, The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man were better too.
I'll keep an eye on the book. Thank you. :)

Brilliance Saga by Marcus Sakey. Third book may be published this year, maybe next
Comment has been collapsed.
Another author I've never heard of. This sounds fantastic, thank you! :)
Comment has been collapsed.
He has started writing in 2007, mostly crime novels (also very good ones). One of his crime novels were already filmed and in the cinemas. I have read all his books in less than a half year ;) The brilliance saga will also be filmed, rights are already sold.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ahh, that's probably why, I don't generally read crime novels.
That does sound like a good setup for a movie. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes, I'm looking forward to those movies. But I guess it will take some years before they start making them

True. It's probably what this entry is for, though: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2776710/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Looks like it.
Btw: The third book of the trilogy will come out in January. 4 months to wait

Not really a fan of sci-fi nor post-apocalyptic books for some reason. Movies/series yes, reading time I keep for other genres. :/

That's okay, thanks anyway. :)

Try the "Long Earth" series by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter
CLICKETY MOTHERHUMPING CLICK!!!

I've seen The Long Mars in the store and wondered if it was any good. I'll stick it on my list, thank you. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
You're welcome, buddy. They're good. I am a huge fan of Discworld and one of his previous titles that didn't involve Discworld, called "NATION", I thought was terrible. I had to force myself to the end but the Long Earth/Mars series are brilliant. Plus, even though we know the novels are fiction, they do bring up some interesting theories regarding the theory of parallel universes and how some people may be able to interact with them

See I like it when a story brings up nice, thought-provoking ideas, and not just for the sake of getting a rise out of readers. It's one of the reasons I like Cherryh's books. She does heavy worldbuilding and very interesting aliens. I maintain that if a movie were properly made of Voyager in Night, it might be scarier than Alien.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'll have to keep my eyes open for those, thanks for the recommendation :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Any time! ^_^ I will quickly say that Voyager in Night might or might not be the best place to start with that author (I had some difficulty getting through the book but it has quite interesting ideas). Look for Foreigner, Cuckoo's Egg, Serpent's Reach, or (where I started) the Chanur series.

I can recomend these 2 in the same universe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Canticle_for_Leibowitz and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Leibowitz_and_the_Wild_Horse_Woman I liked the second one the best but the first is also good
Comment has been collapsed.
I have A Canticle for Leibowitz on my wish list already, but I didn't know he'd made a sequel. Thanks!

Thanks. Sorry I can't help with book recommendations, though; I'm not a big reader.

I don't read any sci-fi books. I can recommended the books from Divergent Trilogy. Thanks for the giveaway.
Comment has been collapsed.
Aww, sci-fi can be pretty good sometimes, but I understand not everyone likes it.
I've heard of Divergent and already had it listed. Thank you. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
I enjoy sci-fi movies though, hope I didn't insult scif-i books now somehow Xd
Comment has been collapsed.
Nah, not at all. I thought you'd meant you didn't like sci-fi in general as well.
I know of some people that prefer reality tv to sci-fi and I just...I deal with drama from real people on a daily basis, most people do, so I don't understand the desire for more, staged, drama. I'd rather watch or read about new ideas and interesting places. :S
For movies though, I could recommend Stalker, though to be warned it's really, really slow, fairly philosophical, and only the slightest bit of sci-fi survived the transition from Roadside Picnic (the first version of the movie, more faithful to the book, was damaged in an accident and they had to start over). The entire movie is up on Youtube in two parts, here and here. (don't forget captions if you need them). Other than that, Blade Runner or Equilibrium are always good.

Thanks~ XD

Don't really have any books to recommend, though it's certainly a genre I'd like to delve more into. I haven't read many like these.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, what kind of things are you interested in? I have a giant book database/wishlist that I continually add to; I might have something to recommend.
Comment has been collapsed.
All sorts of things, honestly. I can't recall having read anything in that post-apocalyptic setting that I've seen listed in comments above. I've tended toward the sci-fi mostly, though I'm interested in all sorts.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well let me dig through my stuff. For now though, I highly recommend Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (if you liked Stalker[movie]/S.T.A.L.K.E.R.[game series] as that story spawned both of those). If you're a fan of both Blade Runner and Shakespeare's Hamlet, you might like Too, Too Solid Flesh by Nick O'Donohoe. Both are sci-fi, though aspects of the former run to post-apocalyptic while within the Zone (and, occasionally, outside it too).
Comment has been collapsed.
I will have to check them out sometime. Thanks for the recommendations. Sorry I don't really have anything to bring to you.
Comment has been collapsed.
No that's perfectly all right. I think that's all I have for post-apoc though. Sci-fi, on the other hand....
CJ Cherryh: Foreigner series, Chanur series, Cuckoo's Egg, Serpent's Reach (also, for fantasy, Legions of Hell if you like crossovers of lots of different historical figures). If you can find Alien Stars, the first story called The Scapegoat is fantastic.
Orson Scott Card: Ender and Ender's Shadow series (Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, really)
Star Wars: The 10-book X-Wing series (including the comics). I haven't read the newest, but the first 9 were pretty good, especially those by the late Aaron Allston.
Larry Niven: The Draco Tavern (I do NOT like Larry Niven under normal circumstances, but he seems to be okay so far if constrained to SHORT STORIES).
Numenera: It's a mixture of sci-fi and fantasy, but the free short story The Amber Monolith was pretty decent. If you purchased the novella addons or related tier for the Torment: Tides of Numenera game, From the Depths: Gold was good too.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think that it might be more fantasy than sci-fi, but I just finished Ready Player One and I loved it.
Comment has been collapsed.
It is indeed sci-fi, and I keep seeing recommendations for it. I guess it's time to add it! Thanks. :)

It's not the best written book ever, but I just finished it and was glued to it the whole time.

City of Golden Shadow
not really similar, but i enjoyed it quite a bit. enough to buy actual books ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
I have the set! :D Haven't gotten to any of them yet since they're all door-stoppers, but I love the series concept as well as the cover to River of Blue Fire (Michael Whelan does fantastic cover work, including some for Cherryh's books; I don't know why he doesn't sell a poster of that cover in particular). Tad Williams is a good writer, as least back when I read Talechaser's Song. Thank you! :)

series : "Dune" by Franck Herbert you won't regret it
Comment has been collapsed.
I watched one of the movies ages ago and have poked through various Wikipedia entries for the series; I admittedly haven't been particularly thrilled. Not that it's a bad recommendation, as I know many people very much love the series (except for later ones and those by Kevin J Anderson, who people have a beef about for some reason). It's just not quite for me.
Thank you though. :)
