It turns out that the protagonist "lost" his body, and his digitized consciousness is in a diving suit - and that's the "creature" you were playing with, him believing himself to be human so much he even imagined himself gasping for air at parts. And the protagonist didn't even address him not having a human body, or just with a "hmm...", tops.
