True story: I once got points off an elementary school math quiz for misspelling "parallel". Haven't misspelled it sinse.

But isn't math about numbers? (I mean yes there's letters when you need to find X or write up a function, but like... wtf lol)
How dare they confuse dyslexia with dyscalcu... what's it called again?

Hey,
you won a giveaway of mine. Please set your Steam profile to public

Hi, thanks for contributing to the Community Train! I've been trying to avoid spoilers for the Witness for years, knowing I'd play it one day down the line.
But SteamGifts already does all of the checks required to use the site! :-) It makes sure that you can't enter giveaways or win multiple copies of a game, and every week I have to sync my Steam account with SG. This is detailed in the FAQ under "Does my Steam profile need to be public to use the site?"
And now that I've potentially won the Witness, I already can't enter any more giveaways for it!

It's not about you owning The Witness, though, it's about sgtools and checking if you have any unactivated wins. I just need a couple of minutes after you set your profile as public, and after that, you are good to set it as private again
edit: a couple of minutes after I see your message, since I'm not always online, that is. You have a right to decline, ofc, but in that case, I'd ask support to check you, and I believe they do it by enforcing you to do your once-a-week switch to public profile, and, well, I think it's an unnecessary load on support since we can do it ourselves.
Sorry for the inconvenience, but I always check my winners with sgtools, and I'm not the only one

Really, SG automatically checks for compliance with its own site rules, and users don't need to do additional work to... double check? Not activating wins results in a suspension, and I've been in good standing my entire time on SG, over 10 years. (Those early days were fun, when every giveaway had less than a 100 people.)
I would rather not open my account to 3rd party software, and if you had just mentioned your cart had special rules, I wouldn't have entered! But it was an Invite Only giveaway, so I'm cool with whatever you decide to do. If you'd prefer, I can just wait a week and then mark Not Received? Thanks for staying in touch.

It's not a double-check; it's the only check, that's the point. No one is checking your account when you do your regular once-a-week sync; it's just a sync.
You (not you, anyone) can win games, activate them elsewhere, and keep entering giveaways and winning games. And no one would ever know because it's not possible to check the winner with sgtools (or by hand) because their Steam account is private. By 'by hand', I mean I can just check title by title to see if you have all your wins on your Steam account or not. That's the only thing sgtools does. It's just automated. It's not software; you don't have to do anything except set your steam account as public for a couple of minutes until I just open this URL, see that everything is fine, and that's it. You can see my own account checking here, for example.
The only way a user can get a suspension for not-activation is if someone would report them. The support won't check everyone, there are too many users for that kind of work, and you have to check them after their every win; so the users here do it themselves. Someone doesn't bother, some bother.
If you wish to learn more about sgtools, I suggest searching discussions.
It's not a special rule. It's just the way the community looks out for each other. As I said, you have a right to refuse my request, I'd just bother the support then.
Please say clearly: Will you set your profile to public so I can check you, or you decline?

I decline

I still think that was unnecessary.

In total agreement with you there! :-D
Thanks for the gift. It's activated and marked as received. I was looking forward to this one!

I guess I failed to explain, but it's the only way to determine whether you are an upstanding citizen of sg, or not. There are no automated checks from sg itself for that. And I'm not a person who gives good games blindly to whoever, because it's easy to game the system. I'm glad that you did not, but I've met different people here.
Enjoy! The game is amazing, it's one of my favorites.

This will mean something to you:
381, +85, +2
So... safe to say, I'm liking the game so far! Since this is one of your favorites, I just had to recommend you try Antichamber, especially if you like hunting for the obelisk symbols. Thanks!
