Sandbox Mode can get pretty repetitive after a while. It's basically winter wilderness survival in a world without any other humans, and survival by nature is repetitive. (Eat, drink, sleep, explore... repeat. And eventually you've explored everywhere).
Story Mode is shorter and less repetitive, and there are other NPC humans, so it's a bit different in tone. It will eventually be 5 episodes but only 3 are done at the moment.
There are also Challenges, which are basically Sandbox Mode with specific victory conditions, so they're less open-ended.
It's not a game for everyone, but it's a great game. Maybe check out some YouTube videos, see if it appeals to you.
