Ghost Story by Peter Straub was pretty good

Sadly I know just two authors who could be of some interest to you, Edgar Poe and Lovecraft. I didn't really like the former (he is, however, considered to be pretty good afaik), but the latter was very enjoyable. You should give both a try.

This was a very nice surprise to me.
It's a horror thriller, it's a very intense story with a great ending.
Gives me chills even now :D

Sorry, not much experience with horror. I mostly roll with Lovecraft and lovecraftian horror is not something I'd consider as "preventing you from sleep" type of horror.

Child 44 a great book kind worth checking it out
