The Weinerei Forum

Had enough to drink? Head back to Rosenthaler Platz Station and head home.

Yes, yes, I did something besides drink beer.

The Weinerei Forum was a very interesting place. There was a 2 Euro cover for the wine glass you 'rented.' No you could not bring your own wine glass. Then, you had access to many wines that they had selected that week for you to try. And by try, I mean have a full glass and decide if you like it. There was no limit to how much you could drink. They had Red, White, Róse, and Sparkling Wines to try. There was is minimal seating and it was usually standing room, unless you got there early. There is a downstairs section that we never fully explored, but we didn't need to. We had almost all we wanted just from what we partook of upstairs.

You see, it wasn't JUST 2 Euro. But it wasn't much worse than that either. At the end of the night, when you finished drinking (or in our case, when they closed), you returned your glass, and paid what you felt the wine you drank was worth.

Absolutely there is potential for abuse. Did any of us? Never. The honor system works in Berlin most of the time so long as everyone knows what the rules are for that particular honor system.

We would show up here about once every month and a half, and just try new things and get silly. We never had any problems and we usually managed to score a table in the process. Maybe not the moment we arrived, but we'd be hovering while chatting near tables and when others left, we swooped in and claimed it. But enough about that, what I can say is, if you don't mind sitting close to people, and you don't mind having to stand from time to time, or wait in line for your Pay-What-You-Want Wine.... It's an excellent place to go hangout. Except during the winter, there was always nice seating outside that we would usually take advantage of. It was a very cozy experience, and by the time we were done, we didn't care how late it was. Or how cold.

Indeed... I mean if you started acting like a moron, they'd throw you out. If you underpaid, they would say something about it... and if you were an ass... Don't bother to come back :D

wow that's so cool, i have to find out if places close to me offer this kind of service as well..
the thing that gets closest to the honor system is a festival that i'm volunteering for every year, it's for free but everyone can pay what they want when they leave, what they felt like it was worth it :)

That was one of the few things I kinda missed while I was there. I couldn't really afford "Good" wine. I could afford the occasional fruit wine, or cheap wine for mixing to make Bowle, but otherwise.... not too often. I personally like a good Malbec, or Sangiovese, or Tempernillo :)
