What hand do you use?
If it were a puzzle it would be categorized under "puzzles", and you would probably see an invite-only giveaway on my SG profile to know there was a giveaway to look for at all.

I never thought about it much, but I'm right handed and have a tendency to use my left thumb often- but I think it works this way:
if the last letter I type is with my right hand, then I often tend to use my left thumb for spacebar
if " " " " " " " left hand, " " " " "' " right thumb " "

I tried randomly typing to see what I did and it looks like I use my right hand pointer finger (I'm right handed). I think if I didn't move both my hands like crazy while typing I'd probably use the thumb on my dominant hand but because I type faster when moving my hands really randomly it just feels more natural to use my finger instead of my thumb.

Funny thing is I type so differently from the way that I learned to type in school and it works just fine for me, lol.

left thumb/right hand -- interesting question and poll results. =)
i think the reason that is and will likely remain the majority is due to habit of right handers having their hand on the mouse, otherwise if we never invented the mouse and we strictly used touchpad or similar where the keyboard is, right handers would typically use their right thumb. but we (right-hander mouse users) mostly adapted.

That's an excellent observation, I never thought of that.

Gamers will always use left hand thumb for space. My logic is that most gamers are used to the WASD position, with the pinky on thew shift key and the thumb on the space bar. People who type the "right way" though, will feel mostly comfortable with either thumbs because both are placed on/close to the space bar.

I think it would be fair to say I'm a gamer but I find it awkward using my left thumb. I think what may influence it is whether you play FPS games (with a keyboard) a lot before or around the time you learn to touch-type. I learnt to touch-type when I was about 13 and before and around that age I mostly played games on console, or games on the PC were mostly strategy or simulation games (Civlization, Simcity etc.). I wouldn't have played many kb/m FPS until 16 or past that.

Yeah, I realised after my post that maybe some people even interpret the OP question not specific to when touch typing with two hands. If I'm playing a platformer with WASD/spacebar or my right hand is on the mouse I'm sure my left thumb would be comfortable.
I thought it would be a given that if using the mouse with right hand, no one would be using their right thumb to hit space.

Right handed, I chose left thumb just to pick an answer... but I use both thumbs. We still had typing class back in the stone age and those repetitive exercises always stressed an economy of energy; which meant hitting space with whichever thumb is attached to the hand which was most recently moving.
I can still remember the teacher droning on. JJ space FF space FJ space FJ space, FFJJ space FJFJ space, for 45 minutes. You'd dream about it by halfway through a semester.

I'm right-haneded, but I use two fingers to bump the space o.O now I noticed that it is left thumb or right forefinger o.O and sometimes I bump space even with my right thumb. I guess it is linked somehow to time since I played something and to length of my commment/post/anything, just to write more comfortable ^^

I had to check and it turned out that I'm using my pointing finger of left hand while being right-handed.
Poll doesn't include such option ;_;.
That's only preference though, I'm used to writing using any combination of fingers and buttons, sometimes I'm using left thumb, sometimes left pointing finger, hard to explain.

It surpised me that some people don't use their thumbs. I guess I'll be more open-minded about all you weirdos from now on.

Right-handed, right thumb.
I was surprised by the result. It seems unnatural to me know to use the thumb of my left hand. I may be wrong but I feel like the left hand does more of the work already so having it also hit the spacebar as well would slow me down. I wonder if the reason I use my right-thumb is a combination of that and being right-hand dominant.

I'm R handed. For FPS, I use the L thumb. For typical typing, I use R thumb.

When you hit the space bar on your keyboard does the thumb you use correspond to your dominant hand? I'm left-handed and I use my left thumb.
