"So, is it a good game?"
I love it.
"Are the devs updating it regularly?"
They do. Recently they added a ship, and two guns plus a dye system (above the usual balancing and bugfixing stuff).
"How vast is the playerbase?"
Well, it's an indie game so don't expect a COD-like playerbase, but it is slowly growing.
"Is it hard to learn and how hard is it to master?"
Easy to learn and hard to master.
"How's the community?"
The community is very good. There usually are CAs (community ambassadors), players who are volunteered to help new players.
"Can you play it well enough not having any friend who'll play it with you?"
Depends on your team.

Even in terms of updates, there's still the adventure mode due sometime (not personally sure when, would have to look it up)

I wouldn't recommend, but its about me, not the game.

Personally I found the game to be very boring. I really wanted to like it, but I couldn't. Each player has a role on the ship - gunner, engineer or captain. And then you only do what you need to do to get your job done. That means for example all the engineer does is run around on the ship and bash on engine parts with a hammer (to repair them and keep them in good condition). And that's it. Sometimes you help out with other things (like firing a canon), but usually you don't have time for that if you want to survive. Certainly a game that requires team work, but to me it felt more like a boring job I have to do than a fun, challenging game.

Here's what I wrote in an earlier thread, with some edits:

Definitely buy it if you're interested. GoI Online has one of the of the best online communities I've met so far. Everyone is helpful, having fun is the top priority. It's pretty small compared to other online games, but there's never any trouble finding a match (unless you're playing at 4 am Eastern Time). I actually like the smaller community because I'll see people I know in almost every match. If you get a crew of people who are working together, you're in for a great time. The devs are continually updating it too and are very active. You can sometimes even play them if you see them online (AFAIK, they go pubbing every Tuesday and Thursday).
The meta used to be stale, but it's gotten quite a bit better now. They've nerfed the overpowered guns and buffed the underused guns just enough so that a lot more builds are effective. Now when I play I'll come across a wide variety of ships, rather than just two specific builds.
If you do happen to get GOI Online, feel free to add me (this goes for any Steamgifts user, too) - my username there is Erheller.

Shakespeare is unhelpful as always as he lends a hand to define the question cheesily without giving any suggestion for an answer.
So, is it a good game? It's on sale on Steam and it's time since I wanted to try it, but what's the situation? Are the devs updating it regularly? How vast is the playerbase? Is it hard to learn and how hard is it to master? How's the community? Can you play it well enough not having any friend who'll play it with you?
