I'm rather new here and I was wondering, how often fake giveaways appear? I usually don't trust those 50 points giveaways, and it's even worse if the generous giver is russian and there isnt any description in the gift. Now, it's not like I doubt every giveaway, if its just a 10/20 point giveaway or less I don't really care or look into their profiles, just type "Thanks!" and spend those points.

And, for thread purposes, feel free to post your worst fake gift and so. Sorry if this is some kind of repost, it seems from what I've read that there are a lot of those.

You realize those points are determined by the price of the game on Steam and not the person giving away the game, right? And that your points replenish themselves over time, so even if you do waste 50 points on a fake giveaway, you'll get them back in about a day or so. As for how often fakes happen, I'm not going to say they don't, but they don't happen that often and the people who create fake giveaways don't last very long around here.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, I do realize it, and it's not like I'd make a big fuss over losing some points EVER, under any circumstance (it's free stuff, even if some lie about it, most don't). Just wondering how often that kind of thing happens.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They are quite often for expensive games or DiRT(whih is basically DiRT3). And if the giveaway is in fact fake you'll get your points back when/if it's deleted.

Yes, I would. You have entered a lot of giveaways, you have posted a lot of comments (almost the same as giveaways entered!), and you descripted why you were giving it away. I would have entered without even looking at your profile or your inventory.

I don't get it OP - why each giveaway created by Russian player ought to be fake?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

not all of them... just the ones I'm suspicious about. I might be discriminating a little bit here, but its something I take into account, though it isn't determinant (English ain't my native language, not sure about that last word). But I really want to stress this, it's not like "EVERY RUSSIAN IS A SCAMMER". I don't think like that. thejadefalcon could be russian afaik.

The reason, more or less, quoting darksaber2k: "Internet scam capital of the world? Can't blame people for being cagey. (OK, it might be tied with Nigeria, but still.)"

You can either take the blue pill and enter and hope to win the game, or you can take the red pill, and then go check his steam profile, see that the game is not present in his inventory and that he is a scammer and move on to other giveaways.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just because it isn't in their inventory doesn't mean they won't give it to you... They could easily just buy it after the winner is announced and then gift it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yea, like you would buy a 50-60$ game and then gift it to a stranger. :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Aren't you already doing that by making a giveaway?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Those can be games given to you from Steam in December contest, The Big Pile of gifts. Most of them are from there, other are from packs/bundles that contain a game you already have and you gift it away.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And what about all those games given away PRIOR to the contest?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

In russian steam a lot of games much cheaper. For example - King Arthur 2 is $40 in US steam, but less than $25 in russian. Do you trust guy, who will buy $25 game and gift it to stranger?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

... the fuck is wrong with your logic, man? If that was the case, this site wouldn't exist and there wouldn't have been $200 given away in ONE giveaway puzzle chain by this woman. Check out her profile and try to apply your logic again.

I prefer to keep my profile private. Doesn't mean that my giveaway is fake, but I already got one comment about that. I guess after it gets listed as received people will be less suspicious if I give something else away.

If you have doubts about a giveaway, follow this general rules:

  • has the person made prior giveaways ? If yes, what is his % of received ? If it's above 75%, he is good.

  • click his name and look at his steam profile. Does that look like a gamer's account or as a fake/unused account ?

  • if her has prior giveaways, check those which are marked as Not Received and read the last comments. It might be the winner's fault - as in the gift was sent but not claimed for 1-2 weeks, then the giveaway creator recalled the gift and made a new giveaway in order to select a new winner

  • look at when the giveaway creator joined steamgifts.com and make sure it's not too new

Anyway, if you check the statistics page, there are less than 5% of fake giveaways on this site: http://www.steamgifts.com/stats

If you are still afraid a giveaway might be fake, feel free to get in touch with the creator via steam or facebook or the forum.

happened yesterdayan't give away i told this guy in the chat he can't giveaway activated games.
his reply sounded something i did not know bla bla bla. im russian i don't understand. i think if i make gift you get more points.
i replied that it's not good for your reputation to make false gifts.
he said: "what its not false"

well i guess its common to not know how this site works :<

i dont mind spending the points its free but winning fake's is a bit dissapointing.

The one rule I followed for entering giveaways before I got 300 point capped every day was to be suspicious of mid-range average rated games from first time givers.

A lot of the time someone misunderstands the site, signs up and tries to give away some random game they only have on their game list that they didn't like that much.
