Am I hella old?
Well since a long time people have been using non personal pictures as their avatar. Anime is more something of the last years (to be more mainstream).
But I know plenty of people that have a picture of pets, nature etc.
So not sure if Picture oF Proof is the origin of this.

Naw, that's not it. I've been in the "internet world" for longer than any of you, and the shenanigans we have been seeing in the past ten years are comparatively "new." Ignorance only recently became fashionable with even the so-called "standards of English" (i.e. official dictionaries) adopting new vocabulary and usage as a replacement for well-established precedent.

You can't slide into PMs though. P can also stand for public, so in that context, public posts or messages are PM, direct (private) messages are DMs. As opposed to the Steam thing, where Steam clearly calls them avatars. If you want to buy or edit it on Steam, that's the term that's used.

I only ever knew PM to mean Private message, never heard it referred to as public message.
And when I search "PM meaning texting" everything is mentioning either private (majority) or personal message.
Outside the few outliers that are talking about AM vs PM in the setting of time of day.
And what do you mean exactly with "slide into"?
Do I have to understand it as transferring the conversation to another "place"?

I simply meant that the p could also mean public, not that it was used that way. For whatever reason, perhaps to avoid such confusion, Instagram chose DM. In the same way that Steam chose avatar, when a number of other options are available.
As for sliding, maybe ICP fans? First, I slide up to the bar... Sliding into DMs, is a phrase used to smoothly? take the conversation private, by messaging directly.

Thank you for the explanation, I never heard about PM being used like that and search gave no examples either.
So it felt like only a very small group was/ is using it that way.
Never heard about the phrase sliding into DM's.
Could be since English is not my primary language or the fact when I was looking it up, I found mentions it is apparently mainly used on Instagram and Twitter? And since I don't use either platform...

With all those Rick rolls. Probably not old enough.

Avatar, profile picture (pfp for short), call it whatever you want. Anyone who says some one is old for not using the latest slang/abbreviation is likely a child that is obsessed with being keyed into the latest trends due to the juvenile nature of their peers.

This!
Most of the slang these days I don't know or don't understand, never been a fan of slang since we don't need 100 weird words for something and I am find with not understanding it to be honest! Some abbreviations are useful, but when we start using it on basically everything, it gets lost, for example AC, is that an air conditioning, is that Assasins Creed, is that Animal Crossing, etc.? who knows what a person means with that these days, so confusing!

I think both avatar and profile picture are equally as valid, although I do prefer avatar, that's probably my age talking :P
Instead of pfp it should have been abbreviated to pp, so we can say to someone that they have a nice looking pp. Kids these days completely wasting the dumb joke potential of an acronym.

"Avatar derives from a Sanskrit word meaning "descent," and when it first appeared in English in the late 18th century, it referred to the descent of a deity to the earth—typically, the incarnation in earthly form of Vishnu or another Hindu deity. It later came to refer to any incarnation in human form, and then to any embodiment (such as that of a concept or philosophy), whether or not in the form of a person. In the age of technology, avatar has developed another sense—it can now be used for the image that a person chooses as his or her "embodiment" in an electronic medium." In other words, interesting, complex.
profile picture - literal, boring, simplistic
Now it's time for my nap.

I dont understand why people keep changing the names of things that already have a name.
The one that gets me is DM, when we already had PM, and IM before it.
It's not that you're too old, it's that they're too young and dumb to know the term exists, so they make up a new one.

To be fair it's not them making up the terms, it's the corporations that create the platforms and giving it a "unique" name. It's just a matter of what social media/messaging platform is the popular one for your generation. MSN/mIRC era it was IM(goddamn, hadn't thought of that one in a long while), Facebook era was PM and now the "insta-kids" use DM as that's the abbreviations of the platforms they primarily used. No idea what TikTok uses but I think(?) it's still DM there so it's just a matter of what social media platform will replace Tiktok eventually and what will it call it.

Uprooting a language is one technique used in establishing control of a population. Relocate the people (e.g. from rural to urban environment), change their language (e.g. add new words and usage), destroy their education system (e.g. remove the study of history), shatter their social structure (e.g. separate the children from their parents), confuse them (e.g. make sure their sources of information are unreliable and full of falsehood), and isolate individuals (e.g. "every man for himself").
It all comes down to making "the old ways" unacceptable. Once the people have become docile sheep through having their "world" upended, they are much easier to control and manipulate. These methods have been effectively used to destroy entire cultures for thousands of years, and they continue to be used to this day. Anywhere you see children being taken away from their elders to be "reeducated," (e.g. "daycare," "public school," "after-school program") you should immediately realize what is actually happening.
That is, if you know your history....

Avatar is that old movie about blue men, right? There seems to be a sequel to it.

Cool post, enjoyed looking for all the easter eggs :)
Happy early birthday!!
By the way, i don't think you are hella old, i still call them avatars, although i do use pfp, but its mostly because it's faster, and sometimes looks better, not because i think the right way to say it is "Profile Picture", but because of commodity :)

you really are old, aren't you? 😸
a few months ago, when I attended a training center, 2 girls told me "oh but you are a student, we thought you were a teacher" I asked them what led them to this deduction, they told me "the way you dress" . You can't fight the evidence, they were young enough to be my daughters.

Hello
So,
I was talking with another user not long ago (like 𝟟-8 days ago) and ended up asking if the image that each user has is still called
avatar
.I mean, Steam still calls it as that but I've seen around several terms to indicate it, and recently I've noticed many people using the acronym
pfp
.Anyway, do you know what that cra𝕫y user replied to me? That I'm hella old. 𝕌nbelievable!
Maybe not hella hella, but I may be a bit old.
Especially since my birthday is in a couple of days—SURPRISE! Here's the real reason of this thread! 😆
