29 cards or 29 items? Each badge gives you 3 items after all. If I had your drunk Valve, I would have 159 cards(2.9 cards per badge) xD

When I crafted 10 badges yesterday (edit: it was actually 2 days ago), I already got 10 backgrounds & emoticons & coupons.
and then got 29 "2014 Holiday Sale" trading cards today :D

Winter badges may give various ingame items when crafted during sale, not these ordinary ones. So yes, it is better to wait for the sale to start, price may be higher.

How do I get the 2014 Holiday Auction badge?
The Auction Badge has three levels that correspond to Auction participation. Create Gems to earn level 1, place a bid to earn level 2, and win an auction round to earn the final level.
