+1 for Majesty. It's actually quite hard, considering randomity from enemy spawns and the behaviour of your heroes.
As I heard Shadowrun Returns also great, haven't tried it out yet.

pixel dungeon is pretty cool and is sort of like a simplified version of dungeons of dredmor. Tiny Dice Dungeon is pretty cool too.

some of my other favorite android games are Trials Frontier, Simpson's tapped out, 10,000,000, Giant boulder of Death, Punch Quest, and Time Surfer.

Similiar games i recommend:

Star Command

Pixel Dungeon

Organ Trail

Ending

Not so similar, but still great:

Kingdom Rush

The Anomaly games

Xcom Enemy unknown (if your device is powerful enough. Edit: Ok i just googles wikipad.. Nice..)

Nightsky

Osmos

Svant - Ascent

Rayman Jungle Run

Time Surfer

Waking Mars

Avadon: The black fortress

Baldur's Gate

Super Hexagon

Another World (great android port!)

Terraria

And of course, the various emulators for SNES, PSX, Nintendo DS, GBA and even PSP might be something you'd want to look into :)

Finally, If you've got some friends with android devices: Spaceteam , oh yes..

The game rymdkapsel was in a Humble Android bundle at some point. I definitely wouldn't pay the current Steam price of $7.99 for it, but if it hits $1.00, or maybe even $2.00, it's worth it. It's short, and once you learn it, there's not much point in re-playing it, but the first time through is nice -- sort of RTS-ish but one where the strategy is more in building placements than army movements.

Dungelot 2 - It is a mix of a kind of RPG/dungeon exploring/minesweeper type game I guess, it is tricky to explain. It is great in short bursts and a lot of replayability, as special items you pick up in the dungeon get carried on to the next game when you die. It does have in-app purchasing but you do not need it as it is mainly to buy coins which you find in the game, it is IAP done right :)

Kairosoft games are nice too, there are even some demos or ad-supported games by them to try out.

Square Enix have many remakes of older games, at a pretty high price. I don't actually like how they scaled up the sprites and general graphics in the 2D remakes.

Rockstar Games offer Max Payne and GTA 3/VC/SA, often at a really good price, considering the already low price though.

Many of the good games have been told already, you may also try to get some android game bundles, either IG or HB. They had great ones like Ridiculous Fishing, The Cave or Knights of Pen and Paper.
Out there is a really great game btw.

I made a game for android. What Could Possibly Go Wrong . You have to fly a airship avoiding pinguin kamikaze and nuclear bear.

The Simpsons Tapped out - quite good...
especially if you like the show.

It's EA, but you only need an account, no need for the launcher

I came to the same conclusion. Why trawl through the generally low quality mobile offerings when you can play excellent DS games instead?

I could recommend Dungeon Village... got it for free a few days ago on Amazon Apps.
It made so much fun, and it is NOT a social game. I played it many hours.
