Should users who don't read rules + regulations be banned first begging offense, or second?
You can't, actually. Hell, people think I should be one.
They will doom us all.

Damn, I got my hopes up for being banned for moderator abuse. I'd go to town on the noobs.
Comment has been collapsed.
Actually people want me as a moderator, not you.
Me and Houdini42 of course.
We're the only people who can purge this diseased community.
People who want you, are the ones who think they can get away with breaking the rules afterwards, because you're too much of a nice guy.
Just think about it.
Comment has been collapsed.
More people want you banned than wielding a ban hammer, I would believe.

People should read site rules when they go there, but I'm sure many of us are guilty of not doing so, and only follow site rules because of common sense. I know that most forums I use, I never glance at the rules. Going on 10 years without looking at the rules on GameFAQs. :P
Unfortunately, there are people without such common sense who also don't pay attention to the rules, and assume that a site offering free games isn't going to have a problem giving them to people that just ask. A temporary suspension is all that should happen the first time. This should be enough that they take a look at the rules. Repeated offences is what should get stronger punishment.

Point taken. Might be wishful thinking, but you'd think fellow PC gamers would be smarter than this..

Any group has stupid people. For PC gamers, look at the majority of people who do PC Master Race shenanigans seriously.
The true master race is the people who play all systems, because they are in it for the games.
Except the Loopy. **** that ####.
Comment has been collapsed.
The PC Master Race thing is a joke, but I think everyone should stop the dumb console wars, accept that PC is subjectively the best platform, and move on. I do own a few other platforms for exclusives (PS3, Wii U), but I would never use any of them as my main machine.
Comment has been collapsed.
Not everyone treats it as a joke. Some people really are that stupid.
Also, PC has some flaws that consoles don't.
Also, while more recent ports are changing this, some of my favourite genre and series aren't common on the PC, which is another reason for me to prefer consoles.
I still play games on PC, but anyone who thinks one system is worse than another is being foolish. Enjoy it for the games. Everything (except the Loopy) has some good ones, and so has a reason to be purchased.
Comment has been collapsed.
Preference is no problem, but I can't agree that consoles have more positives than PC. Might work better for you, because yes, your points are valid (except the last one, that isn't an issue with PC because its digital stores are more robust, varied, and larger), but for the average gamer, it simply doesn't make sense, since most gamers are on a budget, and PC is most cost-effective. I never spend more than $40, even on brand-new games (thanks to GMG), never have to pay for online (which is what you're doing to have sharing capability on PSN btw, when you could just buy the games for that monthly price you're paying). All I'm saying is it makes more sense than consoles on average, as you don't spend nearly as much money, don't have to buy a new console ever generation.
Comment has been collapsed.
The removal of digital games happens. I can go to EB games and get Prey and Wolfenstein cheap. Prey keys can still be found, but Wolfenstien for Steam seems to be right out.
As for pricing, sales happen even on consoles. PSN have done multiple sales with a pile of games for $1 each. I'm hoping a new one happens soon, actually, been about 8 months since the last. There are also other sales and plenty of cheap used games (which obviously isn't an option on Steam).
Paying for online (XBox 360 / XBox One and PS4, but not the PS3 I own) sucks, but given I don't play online, no worries here.
Comment has been collapsed.
If you're talking about Wolfenstein 2009 on Steam, then yes, this is correct, but just like console games, you can buy PC games at retailers.
Comment has been collapsed.
Non Steam though. I mentioned Steam right by the name in the previous comment.
Physical copies are also getting less common on PC, so that won't always be an option unfortunately. While consoles still have digital copies, all the major games get physical releases. Pretty much a given for them.
Comment has been collapsed.
You did, and I thought I mentioned it myself, I must've made a mistake. I edited the comment.
In terms of physical releases, PC isn't getting them much anymore because it makes no sense when everything is going to digital because of the convenience and cost-efficiency. You have to repurchase physical copies when they're destroyed, overused, etc, whereas with digital copies you don't have to worry about that. Not only that, but digital copies load faster, and are moddable. You're right in asserting that some games get taken off the stores, like Steam, but if you've already bought the game before it was taken down, you are entitled to continued support, or a refund depending on the situation.
Comment has been collapsed.
I mention it because games are removed, and not everyone had the chance to get them before that time.
Also, digital has its own flaws, at least if you are in the wrong country. Would you want a digital focused library with a datacap? I know someone who has 20GB a month, covering both uploads and downloads (I trolled them with a gift of Final Fantasy XIII which they can't use). Steam becomes highly useless if you can't even download new games.
I just don't mention that as a positive for consoles, even though more games have physical releases for them, simply because even they now have a large collection of digital titles.
Comment has been collapsed.
You have a point there, but a lot of distribution standards become flawed internationally. Consoles do have the advantage there, but here, in the US, they don't.
As for datatcaps, I don't know anybody who can afford consoles or a good PC that would have datacaps of 20GB, that just sounds ridiculous, but possible, I suppose. I have Comcast, so I have datacaps, but mine are 350GB a month, and I'm not paying more than $40 a month.

It can depend on country, or region. Middle of nowhere is asking for crap service.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sure, I don't look at the rules at many sites, but not this one. I mean, when I first discover a site where I could "win games" (for free ???), my suspiciousness made me read the rules to find the trap.
So I think those people who beg and have no common sense (for the reasons you stated also) should be treated with no mercy.
Comment has been collapsed.
Then you are part of a small group. When I came here, it was already knowing nice people existed (I already had over 100 games, all from gifted bundles and the like), so I acted with the same common sense I would on other sites.
The excuse for everyone else is being lazy.
Comment has been collapsed.
It was the first thing that came to my mind. :P
But seriously, I think people need to read the FAQ, especially if they're unsure as to how this site works. It'll save a lot of time of filling out useless threads asking why they're in trouble for gifting a game they won or for thinking that creating a giveaway means they get that game. :/
Comment has been collapsed.
Be more patient. Be understanding. Not everyone is a native English speaker--so create a giveaway might be less clear to them. And not everyone is that smart, to be honest, so they don't get shit as quickly as we do. We can't discriminate against the less intelligent just because they annoy us sometimes. The stuff you're complaining about here are minor inconveniences at best for the average Steam Gifts user.
Comment has been collapsed.
They are, true. This really isn't as large an issue as I may be making it out to be, but it needs to stop. People need to read the FAQ and rules.
I don't mean to come off as conceited (I probably will anyways) but I'm actually pretty mellow, patient, and understand IRL. I think it just gets on my nerves when there's a site like this that exists, and there's already a system in place for users to have a chance at legitimately winning games they want, and then people want to take that even further and just be given stuff directly.
Comment has been collapsed.
I agree. Maybe Steam Gifts should require every new user to complete a FAQ quiz before entering or creating giveaways.
Comment has been collapsed.
This is also a great idea for a possible implementation. I would very much like this, and I believe it would help our community expand positively.
Comment has been collapsed.
If you have any ideas, suggest it to the staff. I'm not sure what channels there are for suggestions, but if you're interested in helping the site, you should figure out how you can.
Comment has been collapsed.
I should find out what I can today then, because yes, I would genuinely like to help the site.
Comment has been collapsed.
This would be great, and what I'd like to see the mods implement.
Comment has been collapsed.
Temporary and especially permanent bans should only occur when there has been a sufficient number and/or severity of violations to justify it. Otherwise, any and all unfit punishments are terms for abuse and the moderator (or site) should be held accountable for that action and be censured for it. Ignorance of the rules may not be an excuse, but neither should it be justification for excessive punishment.
I have no respect for abusers of a system, especially those who attempt to implement abusive policies into a system, thereby forcing the system to facilitate abuse.
Comment has been collapsed.
Nobody's attempting anything, of course bans would not be handed out to new users without warning, or without serious merit. I didn't start this discussion to implement new rules for bans- the poll here is obviously a joke (at least it was to me). This discussion is real though, and I thank you for your words.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh I know, but I'm just following the behavioral pattern this forum seems to best know me as exhibiting by being a critical, serious, and somber poster who can't take a joke.
Anyway, given the vast applicability of Poe's Law (which I cite for lack of a better description for the phenomenon wherein a lack of discernible indication of the author's intent on the Internet leads to the impossibility of determining said intent), I can't be certain whether you're being serious or satirical. Given my cynical and serious nature, I presume the former. Probably not the best decision on my part, I admit, but it's one I'm used to making.
Comment has been collapsed.
I should have been suspended. I know that now. But I was not and I am thankful that people pointed out the rules and they POLITELY reminded me to read them. For those who did remind me that way, I am grateful.
Comment has been collapsed.
Nowadays if you POLITELY remind somebody that he has to give a game if he creates a giveaway some random guy appears out of thin air shouting "no calling out". Apparently a wall of "thanks" written by zombies is way more useful than exposing somebody.
Comment has been collapsed.
And the way that it should most properly be done is usually through a private message instead of an open post....
Comment has been collapsed.
Really that happens?
I mean... I think it's fairly obvious how a giveaway works. Could it be some sort of language barrier?
Comment has been collapsed.
It must be, because yes, it happens. All the time.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sometimes, it should be. Getting people from non English speaking countries that will do giveaways not understanding how they work. There have also been people from English speaking countries like the US or UK who have messed up and done that as well though.
Comment has been collapsed.
From my experience if you just ban people for breaking the rules due to ignorance it doesn't really fix the problem, if anything it can make it worse. If you take the time to explain to them they are doing something wrong and why it is wrong then you are more likely to fix the problem, and stop them performing the same behaviour in future. (Bit of an irony for users from my SteamGroup I know, although that is harsh for a reason. But those who have been kicked before know that if they ask me the reason they were kicked I have taken the time to explain why and how to get back in.)
Anyway I can best post an example of what I would do in an everyday new member problem situation.
e.g. New user posts a first time thread with a referral link.
What I would do?
Censor out the referral link, leaving a message on the OP post saying what was censored and why, and then close the thread after leaving another message stating the rule that was broken; a link to the rule and why I am therefore closing the thread. Leave the user with a 1st warning and note it. If they do the same again there is reason to ban.
Why?
A) As a moderator/admin it covers you so people know that you are just doing your job but far more importantly, B) It provides necessary information about what rule was broken and why. What point is there closing a thread if there's going to be a few people still left clueless the reasons why it was closed? Also the benefit of leaving a message on SGv2 is that there will actually be an alert left so the OP can see it (ideally you'd want a PM system so you can take them aside and have a polite chat, hopefully answering more questions they may have. But guess that's better than nothing.)
Comment has been collapsed.
Nobody's talking about banning as a serious solution. Of course it'd be counter-productive.

The amount of new users not reading the rules & guidelines of this site is really annoying, especially when they post "giveaways" but are just flooding the site with begging, thinking that when you CREATE A GIVEAWAY (pretty common sense of what this means, no?) you have an option to either give away keys or get gifted a key. What even the hell? Reporting doesn't seem to work, I've done many, and they're still pending for about a week now. Am I just being impatient, or can we do something about this as a community?
Edit: The poll could probably be used more productively, but I went with the satirical approach on this one to lighten the overall serious discussion. I apologize for no disclosure of this earlier.
