It started 4 days ago. Nonstop I am getting about 50 robocalls per day and it will not stop. I do not understand why.

Even after blocking, more keep coming in. The thing is, they also use my area code which means it "could" be legitimate. Most times it is not .I am reserved to having people leave messages if they are legit.

They just want to help you with your student loan debt and they also know that your auto warranty is about to expire. They also know about your credit card debt and want to help with that as well. Such good Samaritans :-)

I already don't answer unless I know the # and let them leave a message. I also have missed multiple legitimate calls. :/

I get a few - I've just accepted it as the reality of having a home phone line.

Not 50 a day but I get about 2-3 a day for about a year now.

Lately I've been getting robocalls from numbers with New York City or Washington DC area codes, and they are leaving voicemail (which is rare for robocalls, in my experience)... and the voicemail is in Chinese. (I recognize the phrase "ni hao").

Good times.

I wish IOS had the option to not allow any calls unless they are in my contacts list. That would make things much better.

It does. Its had it for few years.

Settings - do not disturb

with various options to determine exactly how it will function.

Mine is scheduled to not allow calls during the night unless its on my contact list. You can have it always on if you wish.
I do allow repeated calls not on my contact list to ring. This means a second call within 3 min of the 1st call. You can not allow this if you want.

Note that they will go directly to voicemail without ringing. They can still leave a vm.

I also have a contact called "Do Not Answer" that has all the numbers in it I want to block. If I get a robocall during the day I just add it to this contact. This contact has a custom ring that is silent. Unfortunately they can still leave a voice mail. I'm not sure how to block that for custom contact.

That is not really what I want because I already use do not disturb every night when I sleep, so I would have to change the settings twice every day.

Also, blocking the numbers from robocalls is pointless because they fake the caller ID. You are just blocking tons of random numbers of real people and the robocaller will just use a new number everytime they call.

Must be an american thing. I don't even know what a robocall is...

I'm just assuming they refer to those automated calls with recorded messages that seem to exist only to annoy people(advertise and the like).

I guess. Over here you can only get a sms with a note about incoming discount or such, and only if you sign up with the store in exchange for a discount. Otherwise it's illegal for companies to call random people who are not their users.

It's illegal in the US as well, but how are you going to track them down to enforce it when they spoof their number?

It sounds horrible, doesn't it? People seem to be unable to use their phones because some machines are calling their numbers all day. Like in a bad sci-fi movie.

Yup, at least 3 or 4 a day on my home line, but that's because some asshole that owes money to a bank gave this number as reference and the few times that an actual human called they simply seem to fail to understand that that person doesn't live here.
There's also the occacional call from people trying to call the city's municipality, apparently my number is close enough to be misdialed.
Thanks from providing me with an excuse to complain about it.

Prior to this John Oliver episode I was unaware that robocalls are that much of a problem in other countries. Germany has pretty strict laws when it comes to privacy and protecting customers. I don't think that I get more than one / month.

Same here, never had any idea there were countries so plagued with robocalls until watching that episode. On another note, John Oliver's show is amazing and I'm glad to see someone else who watches them...wish there were more episodes per week though ^-^

Yeah, I'm pretty satisfied living in "overly regulated" Germany. The only robo calls I ever received were from my provider Deutsche Telekom.

P.S. Another German John Oliver fan reporting in. I wonder how successful their own robo call program was. ;)

When I got a "new" number from my service provider, it turned out it used to belong to some old woman who seemed to sign up for every scam possible. From day one & onward I've been getting non-stop calls & texts from robocall scams, all addressed to someone who isn't me at all. Blocking every single number hasn't stopped it, so I had to mute all notifications & just use my phone for emergencies. But to answer your question, I guess no, since it isn't exactly "suddenly" for me ;^ ).

Nope. But I get calls for the guy who had this number 5 years ago, calls for the court which is one digit different, calls for the gas company which is one digit different, calls for the security company call center which is... (you get the picture). Apparently basic comprehension in the difference between a 7 and a 1 is hard for some people, and my phone number has 3 of those. Lucky me. And a lot of the time the people are so rude, phoning me and asking for someone I have never heard of, then acting belligerently to me when I refuse to give them my name or let them talk to this person who I have never heard of. Dude, you don't deserve to know who you are talking to just because you dialled this number, piss off. Literally no one I want to speak to ever phones me on my home number, but it comes with the internet line, so I'm stuck with it.
Oh and I also get calls from 'microsoft technicians'. But I enjoy those...it's fun to waste their time leading them on whilst robbing them of the chance to con someone's granny.

Every couple hours or so it shows on my notifications "99+ calls blocked". I block every single one of these punks, and a couple still pass through on a daily basis.

lol, you are going to have tens of thousands of blocked number soon. You are just blocking random numbers of real people that have nothing to do with the robocallers because the robocallers fake the caller ID to a random number. They usually choose a number from your area code or near by to make it look local.

Well, if that's the case they do a pretty terrible job, because every number they call me starts with 11, and where I live (and close by), phone numbers start with 16. It happens very often when someone gets a call, they look at it and go "oh, it's 11", and turn off. But yeah, I'm afraid if I keep blocking all the numbers it will eventually slow down my phone or something lol. That's why I don't do it that often anymore. But I blocked at least like 500 numbers or something to this point.

They fake the caller ID in the US, I am not sure about other countries. I had someone call me once and leave me a voicemail complaining about me calling him and telling me not to call again. I sent him a text explaining that the scammer faked the caller ID and the call didn't come from my phone, but he didn't seem to understand.

I have consecutive phone numbers with my family members and we would each get a call one after the other because the robocaller was just dialing every phone number possible in sequential order. Each call we got would come from our local area code, but the last 4 digits would be different because it just picked a random number. That way it is impossible to block the robocaller.

This is the first article that shows up when I google it: https://www.bbb.org/article/news-releases/16670-a-new-kind-of-phone-scam-neighbor-spoofing

i get 5-10 a day on my cell phone, at least, all with my same area code and prefix and random last 4 digits. 99% of them get blocked by android spam blocking so it never actually rings my phone but I see them in my incoming call history. They usually don't leave a voicemail but the ones who have (or if I accidentally answered it) are typically one of:

1) The IRS has a warrant for your arrest and you are going to prison
2) Home mortgage scam
3) Refinance your credit cards
4) A lady speaking in Chinese with soft piano music in the background (I don't speak Chinese)

50 per day? That's a bit much. Usually it's 3 or less, from the following:

-someone trying to sell solar panels
-someone trying to sell Medicare stuff for old folks or pain relief medical devices
-some Hindu guy claiming he's from Microsoft and my computer has a virus
-debt relief services
-the Red Cross, who can never get enough tasty blood
-or the occasional political robocall

No suddenly about it; I've been getting almost nothing but robocalls for the last 5 months, at least. The thing about blocking them, though, is that a lot of them use actual phone numbers. My parents keep getting them from my grandmother's number, but she's blind; she doesn't make phone calls. People keep calling her back to curse her out for her solicitation calls, and she has no idea what's going on. It's awful.

I got five or six calls on my home phone today from Indian scammers pretending to be from "Windows Technical Department" or "Telstra (Australian telephone operator) Technical Department" but that's been happening for 9 or 10 years now. They are robo-dialled and a scammer gets assigned after I've said hello a couple of times and the dialling computer has determined that I am not an answering machine.
