Just a bit of me saying thank you back to the SG community.

I haven't been in a position to give back to SteamGifts for a while now. At least not mentally. I was forced out of my job shortly after my daughter was born because my wife was having problems recovering from birth and being able to take care of the baby on her own. This was causing me to have to miss work and so the environment became toxic and I was forced to leave before they pushed it far enough to axe me...
Anyways I haven't had steady employment for the last year and a half and was dealing with depression in all of this. When you can't provide for your disabled wife or for your kids it kind of really takes it's toll on you. We've managed to scrape by thankfully and I've finally been offered a full-time position. If all goes accordingly by about this time next month my family and I will be set up in a new city and state, me with a new higher position and healthy income, and things finally looking up again.

During this time, SG was one of the few things that I had going to look forward to that wasn't also wrapped up in conflicting emotions and guilt. So I just wanted to be able to give back a bit. Unfortunately I'm still flat broke, trying to coordinate a move and coax my daughter to start talking so everyone will have to settle for bundle leftovers at least until I'm a paycheck or two in.
Ok, that's enough of my sob story. Sorry for the wall of text.
Now to the reason that everyone is actually here. The gibs!

Hi Retox. As we overcome our problems we become stronger and more prepared. They are part of our growth. Just try not to face them alone, even when people are missing, God is always open arms. You can trust Him. Peace pal and thank you for the GAs.

It must have been so tough for you ._. It really saddens me to hear, that your previous work wasn't more understanding. Who would not miss work if there's a newborn and a wife who needs you at home?
Depression isn't easy, especially when your family depends on you. So I'm more than happy that things lookl brighter again and I really hope that this new position, along with a fresh start in a new city, will change the lifes of you and your beloved ones for the better and only happy days await you ^^

thanks. It means a lot that there's so many people here that are caring and understanding. Getting stuck in that workplace surrounded by people who feel work has to be first and foremost all the time can really mess with your head if you don't have the same priorities

Wow, it sounds like you went through a really tough time in your life. Each of those things is incredibly stressful on its own, nevermind having to deal with them all at once. So don't worry about making SG gifts, you've got enough on your plate.

I hope everything works out well with the new job and city. And don't stress too much about getting your daughter to talk, though you may want to look into Early Intervention if it's available in your state and you haven't already. They can arrange to have a teacher come to your house every week and teach you strategies to use throughout the week, and it can be very helpful and effective (and is ridiculously affordable).

Thanks for the comments. We started up our daughter in speech and development therapy through early intervention and we're in the process of getting it started up in our new city. We're also looking at adding on OT sessions as it's looking like she has some sensory processing issues. I know that in the long run these won't even really be a blip, and we're working to be proactive. But damn is it hard to see the frustration that she has, and the frustration for us in trying to communicate with each other currently. We've been trying some sign language along with speaking and she's been picking up some words with that, which is great and really has helped ease things a bit. We just keep seeing other kids her age, or younger who are speaking more and even though we know that everyone develops at their own pace (and many of the other kids have older siblings that helped things along), like I said it's just hard. Sorry to bend our ear off, I haven't had too many adult type people to talk to other than m wife with all this. πŸ’™

Oh, no problem at all. I'm glad to talk. And it sounds like you're doing all the right things, so keep at it. It's undeniably frustrating, but it does get better over time.

I've had great results with PECS, but it has to be introduced and taught properly. There's absolutely a system and method to it, and the difference between doing it properly and doing it haphazardly is the difference between struggling for years with no success and the child picking it up right away and mastering it within a few months.

If you'd like to talk some more, please add me on Steam.

I'm really glad to hear things are going better, Retox!

Definitely focus on your family and work first; SteamGifts isn't that important in the greater scheme of things. But hopefully there's always people here if you want talk and/or let off some steam.

Good luck!

Thanks, yeah family has been first and foremost during this time; SG has just been a bit of an escape valve where I can look at games I can't afford and have a little hope that I might be able to obtain them if luck allows, and there's been good people and conversations, even if I've been primarily a lurker.

It's all so strange for an European like me.. these are stories that I usually hear only from Americans and it's extremely sad, we're used to a welfare system that maybe isn't the same all over the world..
I really wish you all the best, to your family too of course, I whitelisted you too just in case you want to join my giveaways and thanks a lot for yours!
I definitely can feel and understand you, though, since I've been livign harsh years due to health problems and other hard to bear issues.. so I'm extremely happy if you're recovering and best of luck <3

Thanks for the kind and heartfelt words, I really appreciate it. Yeah more and more lately I've been really dissatisfied with American culture, doubly so for work culture. It's at the point where my wife and I are seriously considering trying to move to Europe or Canada. Since I unfortunately didn't complete any graduate degrees it's a tough sell for Canada and likely impossible for Europe at this point but maybe after I go back for my masters it will be more feasible. A whitelist right back at you as well. πŸ’™

Thanks a lot πŸ’™πŸ’™
Oh, it's the same for me.. I've never been to America, and it would be too expensive even if I'm already in my early '30s.. definitely I have always heard that Canada is better even for what concerns health care and welfare, although being an European I feel really at home here.. I'd love to see the States, especially the South and the "landlocked" ones, my parents went there 3-4 times and one time they also did a coast to coast trip from Maine (which they described as a paradise) to California (sounds extremely strange to us but there it's normal to use planes and cars all the time, while in Europe we are forced to use bus and trains especially if you live in urbanized areas like the whole Central Europe, no way you can travel by car xD)..
I really hope everything that's good for your and your family's health and future will happen, and Canada definitely seems to us in general, and to me, a way better alternative for someone not feeling good in the US culture as a whole.. thanks for the whitelist and best of luck <3

Bump, I need to revisit some of the GAs later. Maybe I'm not a fan of horror stories, but I's interested in recommendations for all other genres you asked for :)
Ps Hope everything goes well and you'll like your new job

I gave a few recs back to DoucheLord (who'da thunk I'd say that....) earlier, of recent books that I'd personally rec. One fantasy, one thriller, and one that's pretty hard to describe but with fantastical elements definitely.
I'll give a few more one's I've liked that I haven't seen others mention yet. Although I'll hold off on giving descriptions personally at this point since I've been responding for a while already tonight.

Fantasy:
The Unhewn Throne Trilogy and Skullsworn as a prequel - Brian Staveley
The Greatcoats Series - Sebastian De Castell Like the 3 musketeers but with magic and slightly more accessible humor.
The Fencer Trilogy - K.J. Parker (Pseudonym for Tom Holt to be able to write serious and grim works rather than his more humorous ones)

  • all of his books are great though (Scavenger and Engineer trilogies, stand-alone books, etc.)

The Divine Cities Trilogy - Robert Jackson Bennett

Sci-Fi:
American Elsewhere - Robert Jackson Bennett
Mort(e) - Robert Repino - This is the first book in the War With No Name series
Robopocalypse and Robogenesis - Daniel H. Wilson
The Tao series - Wesley Chu - Snarky aliens living in your head commenting on everything you do. Oh and being forced to leave your standard office drone job and become a Bond like secret agent in a secret civil war being raged across the earth.

Others:
The Rook (Book 1 of The Checquy Files) - Daniel O'Malley - sort of urban paranormal spy comedy
The Girl With All The Gifts - M.R. Cary - hard to pin down
exactly, post-apocalyptic but I wouldn't say exactly sci-fi
John Dies at the End - David Wong - I guess you could say that there's horror aspects to this so that it belongs in the next section but it's really a comedy at heart. Albiet one which also works as an effective mind-trip horror.

Horror and Horror Elements - I know you said you weren't interested in horror but just in case of other people reading.
Ex-Heroes series - Peter Cline - Zombie apocalypse with super-heroes taking place in LA. What I like about this series, aside from the humor, is that it's about zombies and it actually acknowledges all of the zombie media out there instead of just acting like zombies are an unforeseen menace suddenly released on the world. That and it has some great pop culture bits, like people bragging about killing zombie celebrities, without making the references feel like they were shoe-horned in.
Coldbrook - Tim Lebbon - sci-fi zombie apocalypse. multiple dimensions
The Terror - Dan Simmons - Historical fiction horror about an expedition trying to find the Northwest Passage and getting trapped on the ice. It's described so well you can practically feel the cold seeping in around you. Perfect for summer.
