Regarding the relatively large amount of giveaways that new users are posting in which they're under the false impression that they will recieve the game from somebody else or the site:.

Wouldn't it be quite easy for the site's Admin/Coders to just add a checkbox just above the Create button when making a giveaway, putting in bold, different coloured, (red, preferably, it gains attention more than other colours), something like,

"I understand that the intention in which I'm creating this for is meant for me to GIVE AWAY this game to the user who wins this raffle. I also confirm that I am fully aware that this giveaway will in NO WAY hold Steamgifts, or any of it's users, under any obligation whatsoever to provide me with this game as it pertains to this particular giveaway."

You could make it so they can't even create the giveaway without first checking that box, similar to the TOS we all checked when signing up.

I assume it wouldn't be too much trouble, anyway, but then I'm not a coder myself so I could be wrong.

If they didn't bother reading the FAQ, they probably won't bother to read this either and will just check the box

but i think i could reduce it. Many people don´t read FAQs...cause they are lazy or whatever, but if they have to type a captcha in their first giveaway "I understand that if give this game and not receive anything" most will notice that they get nothing and leave the site, instead of creating a bunch of false giveways and leaving the site.
but only a captcha is something people will read, cause the have to type it....checkboxes are really useless

But they still might create it anyways just to try it.

I have a friend who made account recently ... he won a giveaway .. and INSTANTLY decided to regift the game ...

He read the FAQ , but it was not mentioned there ( according to him ) lol ...

Anyway after i quickly explained him how things work he deleted it , altho it turned out that he even created 2 giveaways for the same game by accident ... so yeah :|

I Dont really understand is it cause the people are new , and dont really know how things work (even tho its all explained in the FAQ ) .
Or are they just stupid ...

That's the problem.

There is a big link button to FAQ at the top of every page....

....all of the important relevant info like this is on a different lage called "Guidelines" with no big link on the top of each page.
These 2 pages need to be merged.

Actually the part about games must be activated on your own account is in both the FAQ & guidelines. But I agree these pages should be merged, and some stuff from the announcements in the forum should be added

FAQ:

Can I enter a giveaway for a friend?

You should only enter to win giveaways for yourself, and if you win a game, it must be activated and redeemed to the Steam account used during registration. If a friend is interesting in joining giveaways, they'll need to register for their own account.

There is a manual but no tutorial.

Modern video games have trained everyone to follow a tutorial to learn what to do. If there is something they don't understand, they just use trial and error until they get it or google a youtube video of what to do. Read the manual? Ha! Not gonna happen.

If they refuse, let them pay the price. It's more painful than having to restart a level or a game but a few days suspension is certainly a lot nicer than what will happen when they violate the far stricter laws of society.

Too complicated. I get the impression the majority if the type you are discussing come from non-native speakers or children. They may either be unable to read it, or won't bother.

Yeah, but the problem is that there're people who don't understand English much.. so even if there was a big red writing like this :

DON'T PRESS THAT BUTTON

They'd go ahead and press it anyway...

I have no idea what information is available from the Steam APIs, but there are a lot of sites out there that can tabulate an account's total value, so it stands to reason that other pertinent basic information would also be readily available. Given that, it may be a better idea to simply impose giveaway restrictions on those whose accounts aren't x months old, don't have at least y number (or $z worth) of games in their libraries, etc. This would weed out the "newborns" that are so often behind the obviously fake giveaways.

Anyway, moot point; the site administrators seem to hold to a philosophy which would preclude any such implementation, so any discussion along these lines is pure fantasy.

I was under the impression that there currently is a required minimum library value.

Which is very easy to achieve, especially on a free game weekend. I've seen plenty of cases where you look at the account and could wonder just how in the world they even qualified to register.

Yeah, IIRC they are working on making it so people can't get into the site during free weekends, but I am not sure.

There IS a pop-up with some sort of similar text when making your first giveaway since v2 launched. Can stop stupid, apparently.

Ya thats pretty much what we were saying when I was into programming. We tried to make things idiot proof... the universe kept making better idiots, it was a loosing battle... :D

"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning." - Rich Cook

No idea when this was first said, but versions of it have been around for a while.

I've already said it multiple times, but operating on a honor system that allows any new user to put up giveaways with no restrictions whatsoever (3 x your $60 AAA game of choice) is an irresponsible way of doing things and shows how inadequate the policies here are. Users should have to answer a set of questions correctly about the contents of the FAQ and guidelines before they are permitted to create giveaways, and I don't mean just yes/no answers -- in fact I would even word the questions backwards. Until then they can enter giveaways, but not create. That's the first step imo to better insuring the legitimacy of all giveaways.

And anyone who says there is nothing to be done about it is either lazy or full of it.

I disagree. I think they should all be treated with respect like responsible grown-ups instead of insulting them by hand-holding them like little grade-school toddlers.

You can disagree all you want but it doesn't change the fact that that are incredible amounts of stupid people out there that have no idea what they are doing and/or are too dumb or lazy to read, and the only way to save them from their own stupidity is to not just simply hand over the keys to the kingdom.

Also, it really has nothing to do with what you said. But, if they want to treated responsibly then maybe they should act responsibly. If they did then we wouldn't be having this discussion though.

If you enter a giveaway that is fake, all you lose are some points that you got for FREE, and you probably would not have won the game anyways as they are usually public giveaways. That isn't much of a negative.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And just because points are 'free' it still doesn't make it acceptable. Was the point of this site to have legitimate giveaways or fake ones?

Ignoring the whole points thing, the bigger issue imo is when someone wins a 'fake' giveaway and the disappointment of it all. It must feel really shitty thinking you've won something nice when in fact it was completely bogus. I feel bad for those people.

The mods already implemented a straightforward popup but people still click thorough without reading. I don't think implementing a quiz would work. To be honest, if I thought that I was going to get a free game by making a giveaway, in my excitement I would just ctrl+f the FAQ to get answers and not actually read anything.

Yeah disappointment does suck, but I don't think there's a feasible solution :(

Even just a 10 or 15 day period would be fine, if they actually stay, it gives them time to figure out whats going on.

"For the first 10 days after joining Steamgifts.com you will not be able to create a new giveaway, but you will still be able to enter all the giveaways you want, as long as you have the points for them"

A message like that doesn't hurt while they are in the first 10 days of joining.

Then they would log out, forget about it, and then return a month later when they remember to create their fake giveaways.

Yeah well it's not a novel for crying out loud. Nor is it a bunch of legally-worded mumbo-jumbo like you would normally see in a ToS or EULA.

Hehe I'm just trying to image a world where I could select a game like Alien Isolation or Southpark from a drop down box and have 6000 people bid to buy it for me, within as little time as one hour. Maybe in a parallel universe somewhere...
