I've had both Radeon and GeForce cards, and I've never hard the case where a game totally refused to run because I had the wrong brand. Maybe such things may happen with some small indie games that don't use a mainstream engine, but that should remain a very rare occurrence. At least, that's something I never bothered to consider when picking a GPU, and it never came back to bite me ^^

Edit: what I usually do is check some benchmarks like this one https://www.techpowerup.com/review/evga-geforce-rtx-2080-super-black/27.html , and then see which are the cards that are fast enough for me at the price range that I can accept

It's false. Old models of Radeon was incompatible, but not nowadays. My Radeon card, for example, don't create any problems both with modern and not so modern games.

Not exactly "not supported" but games were running better on nvidia cards as they got more optimizations for those. The current AMD lineup is good, in some cases still a little worse than nvidia but in others they win and combine that with the way lower price it makes it a good choice.

As for OP, if the choice is between those 2 I would say the Pulse as I've heard more bad things about the MSI armor than pulse (in fact I haven't heard anything bad about the pulse). At least if your budget is in the range of the 580. You can check this recent video from LTT, it's a pretty good one for GPU's in the last month - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLQQP5NcNJY

It's not true, back in the day some little graphic function was more complicated (needing more "power", as they are optimated for Nvidia, like the enhanced hair in the witcher 3) but the game run smooth out of it. (I been able to run TW3 ultra with a R9 380 lol, big overclock tho) It's the only "not supported" type of issue.
So some game loss a bit of performance on radeon with equal "power", but if you got a good offer on radeon you'll get a more powerful card for the same price so it's not a thing at all.
It's also true on the others side, Radeon like a lot low lvl API, so mostly on a vulkan/Dx12 game mostly radeon will improve their $/performance much more than an Nvidia card.

The last two posts are correct, the issues people talk of date back to the 90s when most standard builds used Nvidia cards so naturally they received more attention to optimize the games - much like Windows > Linux.
Market share is more even now and I can't say I've ever come across a game that didn't work on a Radeon and I've used them for most of the last 2 decades.

OP - It's hard to advise what you can get without knowing your local market prices. Look out for special offers on better cards, especially if you can hang on til newer models come out. Don't be afraid of a refurb/second hand card if it has a good warranty.
If you want your machine to last a few years you should invest a good portion of your budget in the card. Radeons will give you more performance per dollar so are fantastic mid-high range cards but I think the one you listed is a little low to be future proof at all. There's virtually no difference between MSI/Sapphire etc except form factor and maybe warranty - they can be different sizes and have different cooling configurations.
Of course it also matters what monitor you have - if it can't run the resolution you want then the higher card could be wasted.

That's no longer true.

There are a few games that have worse support on AMD cards - Nier: Automata is slightly more broken on AMD, and for a while v-sync support was broken in Wolfenstein: The New Order - but such games are rare.

I haven't looked into PC parts for a while, so I don't really know. A big factor that's missing from your post IMO is the price (we could look, but we don't know where you're shopping ^^): when you compare parts, it's typically like "okay, this one is 5% faster but also 10% more expensive, so maybe not - or maybe yes if you really want that extra performance at a cost".

It globally looks like a decent build though (except for the MOBO, I have no idea about this one), just don't forget to pick an SSD, and maybe consider more RAM (depending on what games you plan to play and if you multitask), or at least a 1x16GB instead of 2x8GB, to save slots for future upgrades.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A 2x8GB ram would be the better choice here, if it's only for gaming he doesn't need it any higher. Running in dual channel is a lot better than single and his motherboard has 4 slots for ram so even with 2x8GB he has 2 more slots for a future upgrade.

IMHO dual-channel is way overrated but yeah that's something to consider, I guess.

2 RAM slot only on desktop MOBO still exist? 2019? ^^

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Totally, we have one at work, and it's actually a pretty powerful one (used for real-time image processing).
But also, 64GB RAM PCs exist too, and for this it's nice to not waste slots with 8 GB sticks ;)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thanks for the information, i didn't thought it still exist ^^ As most desktop computer are made to be powerful and upgradable. Even if it isn't always a wise choice, people would rather go for latptop for lower setup. (Rather than using the "little" MOBO i seen a lot in the early 2k10's/late 2k's).
Sure, i knew that, but 64GB ain't common about personnal computer. We wasn't speaking about a server or a workstation dedicated to something specific. I don't know anyone with more than 32 on home setup. And i feel it's already overkill for 98% of the people ^^ (e.g good photographic setup don't need to be that much now despite they had to be "top end" back in the day.)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah actually, that image-processing PC doesn't even have 32GiB, it only has 16... in a single stick ^^. We needed something compact-ish, so we took one of those micro-ATX cards. They often have only 2 RAM slots, apparently. The cheap ones, at least.
As for 32GB in a personal computer, I do need that but I'm not really the average user I guess. 64 is surely too much but I like knowing that I can just add another stick if 32GB becomes an issue.

I do find it that single channel is a bit of "over hated" but I wouldn't say dual channel is overrated, especially when in a lot of cases it brings 15-50% or even higher performance increase in games, there's quite a lot of benchmarks and tests online proving that.

I suggest you to choose NVidia cards. They are more expensive, but quality is higher
But for example my MSI Radeon RX 570 ARMOR 4G (I bought it because I hadn't enough money for NVidia) show good results even on Metro Exodus,
And don't forget about cooling. Cooling is VERY IMPORTANT.

NVidia cards. They are more expensive, but quality is higher

Quality comes from the brand and manufacturer, not the chipset. I've used Nvidia and AMD and both are good, both have their strengths and weaknesses. I go with whichever gives me the best value for the performance I need.

Disagree with you. NVidia has more expirience, so It can create better technologies.

They both innovate in different ways. Nvidia currently did RTX, and that's great, but AMD has done stuff that caused Nvidia to play catchup - triple-monitor support with Eyefinity, adaptive sync without requiring a hardware chip in the monitor with FreeSync, multiple v-sync options in the drivers, a built in over-clocking and performance monitoring utility, better power management.

Nvidia has stronger developer relationships, but it also participates in strong-arm tactics to give themselves an advantage.

Actually, you could check if there are any good deals for Vega 56, during some sales it goes ~230 EUR and cheaper. On performance level, it is way better than RX580, basically in a different league. Of course it is power hungry, but this can be fixed with undervolting.

Will be easier to chose something if you write your monitor resolution, if it has FreeSync / Gsync, maximum budget.

Problem with AMD vs Nvidia is that game developers optimized their games for Nvidia more. It's not problem with "worse" card, only with Nvidia throwing money at devs, to make games work better on their cards.

If you want to play in FHD at medium-high details at 60 FPS, then it does not matter if you go with AMD or Nvidia. Both have cards that work good in this situation. So just pick cheaper option, which will allow you to play in your desirable conditions.
Right now it's not the time to buy GPU "for the future", as in few years you will be able to buy card for half of the current Nvidia "RTX ready" lineup, that will be able to use RTX without dropping FPS to 30.

Don't buy Radeon, they're weak and hot.
Ryzen 2600 is ok, I myself have 2600x, but as tests show in modern games 8-10 cores are better by 5-10%.
Can't say anything about the motherboard.
16gb of RAM is ok.

You should compare GPUs with similar price tag on their performance / power consumption, and then draw conclusions. Trying to generalize whole company with such statements will fail miserably.

Just like people who write that AMD CPUs are bad, and base their opinion about Ryzen on Bulldozer features. Bulldozer was bad, and I would not touch it with a stick. that's why I went with i5 4590. But now AMD CPUs are better overall, so my next one will be 3600.

My MSI RX 480 Gaming X was always cool and silent, the power draw difference between it an a GTX 1060 was negligible, and I can't think of a feature than the 1060 had that my card didn't.

are you in the market for used components? if you are looking for an AMD gpu, I wouldn't suggest an armor or a pulse. If it were a choice between a used / refurbished gaming x versus a new armor, I would go with the gaming x (I have an rx 580 as well on one of my machines). Going for the top tier models also means they are better binned. I run mine (it's an xfx black edition) undervolted and there is significant power savings.

I am currently looking to upgrade my pc and realized that it´s just better to buy a new one and on the process I came up with a radeon too but as I as checking the cpu and motherboard and they were all Intel and the graphics card was amd I then decided to change to a Intel graphics card as I am not sure if you can have amd graphics cards with intel cpu or vice versa.

Intel graphics cards doesnt exist. And yes AMD graphics card work with intel processor. (Aswell, Nvidia graphics card work with AMD processor.)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

My mistake then! For like ranking graphics cards I go like rx with amd so that leaves gtx and rtx for intel, thats how I try to see which ones are better because imagine a gtx 550 if I go with number then that one is better than a rx580 and it is not so I try to make it easier for me to say that and probably should have not said that as it could cause confusion on someone else.
Now that you clarified the whole amd work with intel stuff I am planning on a i7-8700 and a Asus ROG Strix B360-H Gaming, which graphics card would you recommend, a ASUS ROG STRIX RX580 O8G or a MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Ventus XS 6G OC? I am like go with the 8gb or like 6 are enough

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Asus ROG Strix 580 cost 300€
MSI Ventus XS 2060 cost 370€

So you try to compare cards with 20% price difference. That's not how you do it. You should look on GPUs with similar price tag.

Also don't look on numbers, they are not comparable at all. It's just producers way to position their product, and show which GPU is faster within the same chip family. Not between different brands (AMD vs Nvidia) or even different chip families (Maxwell, Pascal etc).

Be careful of buying second-hand graphics card. If the card was previously used for cryptocurrency mining, you may end up having to buy a new one sooner than you expect. I suppose that's not a problem if you tend to frequently replace your card to stay on the bleeding edge, but worth keeping in mind.

For my personal experience Raytracing is NOT worth it , yes is wonderful to see visually for eyes... but not add nothing to the gameplay... and exceptions where you see an Enemy reflected on mirrors\glass and you win for that is very RARE... top of that rtx make games much slow .
also if someone must to buy a new card for play "60FPS" at ultra is not worth it too because many latest games can't run 60fps ultra gfx and top of that many games have FPS lock that make you can't use your card at 60fps too also if it is enable to run game on it (for example gtav, sekiro etc.) but Msi afterburner or unlock fps mods help a little about this.

So buy it only if you want play old games at 60fps and new games at 30 (ultra 1080p).

Top of that consider to try streaming services too if you have a good internet connection, they run games with best graphic than a 2060 rtx super also if have problem little delay etc.

in my channel if you want you can see real performance fps with witcher3 of 2060 RTX super , witcher 3,rage2,pes2020 demo, run at 60fps ultra max graphic settings 1080p,but GTAV,metro exodus,Sekiro NO etc..

i council to you to get nvidia for the Filters freestyle that in some games make really the difference (you can ajust definition, colors etc. for some games make the game look so much better) more people understimate this , i try this with AC1 and looks like a remastered with my filter applied, sekiro too with my settings for definition and colors is 100 time better than the original game.

also better if you take msi gaming x series they have 2 fans, they good dissy, good sand and have good software for controls fans, temperature, framerate in game, unlock fps, leds etc.

if you take the amd 5700 be sure to take the version with 2 fans and backplate on on gpus they help at very hot temp to not damage the gpu for curve and damage solders points etc.

After 1 year is better if clean fans from dust and reapply thermal paste , and is better if thermal paste is artctic silver 5 or prolimatech pk3 or good quality tp , not use that white cheap same liquid that pc shops give for free etc.

I have the 580 OC. It's a great card. No complaints. I recommend it. I can play Arkham Knight at 1080p smoothly at 60 fps. TW3 and FFXV I have to turn down some things to get 60 fps. Most games no problem at all.

Now is the worst time to get a new gpu. AMD has no ray tracing and only the most powerful and expensive nvidia card can provide decent performance with it on. It would be better to wait for the next gen cards from both companies. That would give you good options for the highest end cards and also mean a drop in price for the cards currently in the market. Unless you really can't wait, of course. If I had to buy a card right now, from a cost-benefit standpoint, I'd pick the 2060 super.

Your choices looks good. I'm personally a big fan of Asus motherboards, and so I try to buy them whenever possible, but ASRock should be fine.

I'm not very familiar with the Saphire cards (they're kind of middle of the pack), but the MSI Armor heatsink is not very good - it isn't particularly cool or quiet. It'll do the job, but if you can find an MSI RX 580 Gaming X for not much more, it's a much better choice - the heatsink is very quiet (practically silent) and keeps the card very cool. If you're sensitive to noise, getting a good heatsink is well worth it.

Other cards with good heatsinks include Asus cards (particularly their Strix line), Gigabyte cards, and EVGA cards (those are obviously Nvidia only).
