So my old phone got stolen, and I'm borrowing a friends for now. I want to change my phone number on Steam... but I can't change/delete/or do anything with the old phone number until I put in the SMS code. Problem is, the SMS code can only be sent to my old, stolen phone. How am I supposed to change steam phone numbers if I can't access my stolen phone?

yeah I know it is.. but I have had bad experiences with trying to contact them. I've heard they stepped up their game though so it should be okay.

You can ask your operator to give you a new card with the same number, while block the old one.

^This. Since the number is tied to your purchase, they can issue a new SIM with the same number on it. In some countries/serive providers, it is even free of charge in certain time intervals.

You can tell them that your old SIM is broken, on that way they will resend you a SIM (free).
and explain that you need your mobil for business reason and will be nice if you can get your old number back.

Many people used temp online SMS services for SteamGuard mobile authentication. It's rather idiotic that Valve isn't sending this via email (like they do password changes)...or like they used to (with SteamGuard codes which are not tied to the phone number whatsoever).

If somebody used temp e-mail or temp SMS to confirm anything security-related then he's an idiot and he fully deserves what is going to happen to him.

Although I'm sure it's not the case with OP.

I was thinking the same thing. I thought it would be as simple as an e-mail confirmation.. but Valve does like to complicate things sometimes.

Yes, you would think. Everything should be accessible via email for sure.

Free - it sounds great. Here nothing is free. Even if you go to the operator you buy a new phone (example that uses the new SIM cards) and sign a new contract. Nevertheless they will make you pay for your new card.:)

Well, as I said, it is depending on country and the provider. My latest SIM change and the phone I used before that were both free, and I'm not even on a subscription plan but a simple pre-paid one.

When you first installed the app you should have written down your R-code and generated a list of one time use Steam Guard codes.

I was just pondering this very question today myself....it's Valve's genius at play again.

The thing is, you used to be able to use one of the emergency Steam Guard codes to do it...but then they changed it to a numeric SMS code that only gets sent to the very phone you are trying to remove. Brilliance.

So the R-code or one time use Steam Guard codes don't work?

The Steam Guard codes not at all any longer (I tested this today), and the R-Code is also problematic as there are reports that SMS is still needed sometimes when removing that. Plus it still doesn't allow you to change the actual phone number (I don't think). It merely deactivates the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator. Meaning you can't activate it again later on with another phone regardless.

Steam Support Hell™ is about the only solution by the looks of it.

Same here
I contacted support and after a week i get my old number deleted, they ask you for proofs, in my case i gave them a lot of game keys and fiinally my old number was removed
Tbh steam support is really shitty compared to other companies, i had a problem with my hearthstone account once and the blizzard support was really amazing. To bad that steam is getting sillier every time

you cant log in into your steam account without the code? i have the mobile authenticator but it dosent require any code to log in my home PC.

Guesss your better option is to get your old number back, your mobile provider can help you with that.

It doesn't ask for your code only if you're on the same IP, didn't log out and in case of client chose that it remembers your password.

  • if your ISP gives you dynamic IP Steam will ask for SteamGuard code every time your IP changes - for many ISPs it means once a day.
  • it's not so uncommon for more than one members of the household to have steam account - maybe your dad/mom/son/daughter/brother/sister/wife/gf are a gamers as well - then most of the cases whoever wants to play will log into their own account. Each time after you log out Steam will ask for SteamGuard code again when you try to log in.
  • If you're a student living in dormitory or sharing a room with a roommate it's common thing to log out of your personal profiles after you're done with them for security reasons. Someone living in same room/flat with you may access them when you're not around otherwise. Each time after you log out Steam will ask for SteamGuard code again when you try to log in.
  • if you have alt accounts for card farming and doesn't use ASF but for example idle master - you have to log into them first to farm/trade and only then you can sell cards on your main. Again - each time after you log out Steam will ask for SteamGuard code again when you try to log in.
  • Probably other examples ;p

are you using the "Steam-Mobile-Authentificator" on that stolen phone? You can unbind that phone with the R-Code you got when started the Steam-App the first time.

Help, I lost (or sold) my phone and can't log in! What do I do?
If possible, you should contact your wireless service provider and get a replacement phone with the same phone number. Steam will be able to send SMS messages to your replacement phone, and you will be able to recover your account as described below.
If you no longer have access to your phone and don't have your recovery code, you'll need the assistance of Steam Support. Use the "Contact Steam Support" button at the top right of this page to get help removing your authenticator. If you don’t have access to the email address that is currently associated with your Steam Account please provide proof of account ownership within your ticket.

Like nonamebg suggested you should contact your operator and tell them your phone was stolen and that you want to deactivate your SIM. Also that you would want a new one with the same number. Then try deactivating steam guard with it.

I guess this is yet another reason to use Steam Desktop Authenticator over mobile one. You can't lose your PC and it's highly unlikely someone will steal it as they would have to break in your house.
