Linebreaks are so broken on these forums

I've noticed that other people can use linebreaks and it makes their text go down a single line. However, it has never let me do that. A linebreak doesn't work at all unless you have two linebreaks. In addition, neither BBCODE (standard forum language), nor HTML works for bolding?
