Hey everybody, I was bored recently and have started researching on pinging system in video games. To my surprise, I cannot really find an article that tells the origin or some interesting trivia about ping, my results were swarmed with apex legends, how to ping in cod warzone, and rainbow six siege ping 2.0

Does anyone know some of the earlier competitive games that were among the first to have a ping marking feature? Or the first game? Or can you refer me to some articles or books on those kinds of non-verbal communication in competitive surrounding?

I haven't played any of the games mentioned, so I'm not sure if we're talking about the same ping, but I remember a dedicated ping button in Starcraft 2, and not really ping, but (maybe - long time since I played those) ping + mark on map system of shouts in Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 (e.g. "Enemy vehicle spotted!").

yeah, you aim at something, and you just click a button and a marker pops up and stands there for a while, you ping a location basically. I was just curious and haven't opened a topic on sg in a long time, wanted to hear other people's opinions

Well, if i am not wrong we could ping on Dota 1's map, which means it should work on Warcraft 3 as well

Age of Mythology from 2002 had a "ping" system.
And checking out the AoE wiki, there's a part about "The player can now signal allies which places an X on the mini map where it alerts allies of strategic locations."
So we're at 1999 earliest so far.

https://battlefield.fandom.com/wiki/Spotting
Battlefield spotting history. In battlefield games it is very difficult to play using jets without spotting function. It is because of this you won't see many jets in hardcore maps

Guild Wars 1 had a ping system too. Players could ping enemies, and click on the map to mark a position. You could also draw on the map and everyone would see it.

I was just joking, but also replied below with link to the comment which describes ping pretty well. In essence, it's a tool at player's disposal which allows for marking a place in game world in quite attention grabbing way (sound effects, bliniking icon, column of light, icon on minimap) for a short period of time (long period of time would simply be a map marker).

Age of Empires and Warcraft III are the earliest games I played that feature a ping system.
