Just went to the Workshop to check out the price of mod prices introduced. I'm freakin' shocked. 4.59 euros for Arissa - The Wandering Rogue mod. Are you kiddin' me??? For real? I paid like 7 euros for my Legendary edition, and this is one mod's price, in comparison?...
Comment has been collapsed.
Actually it's not fixed at 4.59 but it's set to pay what you want option with the lowest possible being 2.79(not that I agree with the whole thing anyway. I'd gladly donate that 3 euros directly to the people behind nice content like Arissa but I'm not giving even a cent to Bethesda and Valve)

Steam still is the best DRM platform, but the gap between Steam and others is getting smaller and smaller with every month. And that is not because others are getting that much better, but because Steam is getting that much worse.

people are selling mods that require SkyUI and SKSE to work they are using other modders work in there mods and selling them as if it was there own work.
That right there is the same thing Valve is doing getting paid from other peoples work.
Comment has been collapsed.
Fellow Skyrim modder I see :) Such a ridiculous situation huh? I'm 100% sure SkyUI and SKSE won't get any credit/compensation.

Yeah i dabble in mods a little even made some but most of my mods came from nexus and any that i liked get donated too IE ones that add meaningful content ect.
The whole idea of paying before you try a mod is BS, then there's people selling mods that require other mods to run ... and finally people selling mods other people made or there will be soon lol.

This reminds me of the stuff that went on back when Taleworlds got into paid mods for Mount & Blade, I lost one of my best friends over that one when he quit modding and totally vanished after some of his work was stolen and stuck into With Fire and Sword for a while. Much of the community defended those in the wrong over that one. :/

Why so serious? If modders want to sell their stuff (and get 25% of the price, lol) then so be it. Next to nobody will buy their mods unless they are extremally good and that is rare and doesn't happen without community support anyway. Let them fail.
Free mods will not disappear and nobody forces anyone to buy paid ones.
And besides that workshop mods are not compatible with mods organizers. In case of Skyrim it's one huge NO WAY.

Yeaaah, when people say 'mods' I always think of things like CS:GO maps and skins, or at best the add-ons in GMOD or custom maps. I could see this all working in a tiny-scale microtransactions kind of way, with mods being about £0.10. However when they charge this amount for so relatively little then they're going to get virtually no purchases, meaning all that hard work will only be appreciated either by pirates or by just a handful of people.
It's a new system, it needs tweaking, but once people realise they're really not making any money they'll adjust too. Either to realistic inoffensive prices, or not charge altogether.

Im pretty neutral about valve, since I haven't done anything to require me to speak to their support, and im sure vavle wasn't expecting the thousands of unique tickets per day when they implemented the trading and gifting system, I see them as going something like "well crap, we screwed up, ah who cares we make money, feck em"
I admit I didn't look at the article regarding the modding, but I personally like choice, if they want to implement paid modding its fine with me as long as they leave creators an option to upload free mods.
Though really with a rating I would give Valve a 4/10 all because of those stupid phishing bots that won't leave me the heck alone.

You love Valve but Valve (like all companys) love & want money.
¿If ppl pay why stop it?, remember...it is a business...
BTW Steam are solid and have got good offers, dont see only the bad...
And for me isnt bad...if i want something normal is pay for it...we always want all for free.

Valve started going down hill when they wouldn't give us HL3

Valve's Tom Bui said: "User-generated content is an increasingly significant component of many games, and opening new avenues to help financially support those contributors via Steam Workshop will help drive the level of UGC to new heights."
By financially support he means that they can buy games because the money they receive will be steam wallet money and not actual money they can spend on food or expenses. This seems like total garbage. Plus the fact that the owner of the mod only gets 25% of the actual price. That's nothing, during the meantine valve and bethesda get paid for sitting on their chairs and not creating anymore content for their games.
I have actually played around with alot of mods, and I have only seen 1 for which I would pay money for and thats ICEnhancer for GTA IV (and its FREE). The rest are rubbish I would play with for a few minutes or hours and then delete them.
PS: Be prepared to see every workshop on steam receive this same treatment unless the community and the media throw a shitstorm about it and they remove paid mods.
Edit: Read the FAQ abit, seems that modders get the money sent to their bank accounts and they don't just receive wallet cash.

I really wish people could do a real shitstorm at valve that 'may' do something which I doubt. I do agree that the way valve is changing modding should be stopped.

Pointing out the horrible Customer Service too, I haven't had any issues myself thankfully, but people that do always say the CS sucks ass and it's almost non-existent to the point that EA has better CS on Origin.

It seems that donations was the fair thing to do
Comment has been collapsed.
I saw another thread that summed it up like this: "it sucks for the users but it's great for the modders", however OP call this way of thinking silly.
I have no clue about modders, so I don't know how fair or unfair this is for them, but as a user I do feel it's a dick move just for greed.
Comment has been collapsed.
Valve takes 75% of the profit from the modders for doing nothing. Nuff said.
I'm not sure about this, but if true then the modders aren't even "supported" by the "money" they make as they cannot make a living (blatant lie on the workshop page) out of it, they only get steam wallet money which they cannot spend on food, rent etc.
Comment has been collapsed.
WTF... this is ludicrous, if I were a modder I would rather ask for direct donations that I could keep at nearly 100% (I suppose paypal or a middle man would take between 1-5%) than just keeping 25% of my "hard earned money".
What a douche move by Valve, I hope people don't buy them and the modders who supported this model go back to asking for donations.
edit: I can't believe I wrote ludacris instead of ludicrous... lol
Comment has been collapsed.
To be perfectly honest? I have no idea how to feel about this.
On one hand, it is kind of nice to see modders being at least... PARTIALLY paid for some hard work.
On the other, they're charging for shit like mods, games like Air Control have come out, and I'm pretty sure if you know how to make a mod, you probably have some form of talent that will pay more than 25% of whatever Valve throws onto Steam.
There are a few things that worry me about this, though.
Comment has been collapsed.
There seems to be a missing option. The "I don't care, I won't be buying them" option.
If a game's not fun without mods, I won't buy mods in hopes that it fixes the game. And it it is fun without mods, why do I need to spend money on modding it? They're not official and they don't add anything to the canon, so it's pretty easy to just completely ignore them. DLC is much worse, especially when it's plot-related and ties in to the next game in the series.
Comment has been collapsed.
Rip skyrim modding ?!?!? wtf are you talking about ? maybe you should do some research before posting garbage like that..only small amounts of mods you will have to pay for and that are going to be DLC sized mods (small mods will stay free cuz nobody will buy them trust me) and even than it will be pay what you want. If anything this is good for modding comunnity cuz it will encourage modders to make more mods and more importantly better and more polished mods
Comment has been collapsed.
Maybe you do some research first. Have you even looked at the workshop recently? No DLC sized mods there...
Yeah earning 25% on a $1 mod is definitely encouraging, seriously should I just throw empty soda cans at your head and you'll feel encouraged to make better and more polished mods? Same thing really.

Yep, current list of paid mods is laughable. I really doubt anyone will ever buy them for such prices and that's exactly why they will fail hard. So, there are nothing to worry about. Beside that we already have a tremendous library of mods on Nexus and a few other sites which won't disappear in the thin air just because Valve made it possible to sell mods.
Comment has been collapsed.
But there are FREE and PAID mods you can get. It's only to support the modders who work hard on creating mods. You can still get free mods if you want and if you like you can buy the PAID mod also. I don't see fuss about it. Don't you want to be able to monetize or get some revenue on your hard work?
Comment has been collapsed.
Imo it's bad for modders and gamers alike. It is high time that Valve gets some resistance so that they realize that they cannot get away with anything. (like keeping 75% profit)
Comment has been collapsed.
The big deal is the modder only gets 25% of revenue while the rest 75% go to Valve and bethesda. So in short modders get paid shit. If you wanna support the modders DONATE directly to them and not via the Workshop that is asking for that insane percentage
Comment has been collapsed.
Ah also you are a leecher, nice catch. blacklisted :3
Comment has been collapsed.
Don't care. I leech all I want. You blacklist all you want. You're blocked for making stupid statement, anyway. I dislike people who can't even comprehend simple things.
Me 1600 games. You? Do I need a giveaway from you? Does it make you feel superior by stating you blacklisted me? What a weak statement.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's honestly funny how pretty much the non modders are supporting this. Everyone who even modded game a little bit, doesn't even need to be a creator is pretty much against this. Since majority people who use workshop have no clue about skyrim nexus, they're going to support Valve and almighty Gaben. GJ Valve, gj.

[UPDATE]
Seems like the mod authors themselves are really enjoying the new system. This is all so good for modders/players alike huh? Nuff said.
[IMPORTANT PART]
So yeah RIP Skyrim modding pretty much, trading is dead/dying, region locks are getting crazier every day and heck even the TF2 economy is pretty much gone (I just throw it in the pile). Fear not we still have a shitty, laggy slow client, inconsistent download speeds and Steam servers collapsing during bigger events/sales or just whenever they feel like it. Outrageously bad support, big profile Early Access scams and failures (Spacebase df-9, WarZ, Stomping Land). Complete lack of quality control and responsibility over Greenlight (and in turn store content).
[TL;DR PART]
To tell the truth, I'd be fine with the rest of the issues, I could live with region restrictions, Early Access, Greenlight etc as they do not directly affect my personal gaming experience (although I do disapprove of them and I happily express my opinion)
Introducing paid modding is the last straw and it is way over the line. It directly kills off the most loved aspect of gaming for me. I am one of those special people who prefer modding games to playing them. I am already supporting modders over at the Nexus, but I will not pay £400-500/game to get all the 100+ mods I love to configure, test and use. I don't think it is unreasonable. If you don't have a clue about modding in general, or you are not a mod user then I'd recommend that you refrain from repeating popular comments like "finally modders get paid for their hard work" etc. it'll just make you look silly, you obviously have no clue.
More on modding (Skyrim Specific)
Thank you for expressing your opinion in a civil manner. I understand that this is a controversial area and might be grounds for heated debate but please refrain from insulting each other.
Also the poll is just a joke.
