So there's new Sanctum giveaways. An appropriate response? Remove it from the games you can create giveaways for, rather than remove the thread concerning how to get the keys. Why punish those who want keys for themselves and now don't know how to get them huh?

This is not a site for sharing shady methods on getting games. Likewise, this is not a site to get exploited games and give them to unsuspecting people.

What kind of shady method?

You get a legit trial account, get the legit keys they offer as a promotion for their members and cancel your subscription before you have to pay.

Pretty much this...it may seem a shitty thing to do but we're not doing anything illegitimate here.

Just because something isn't against the rules doesn't mean its not an exploit.

More importantly, this site is not affiliated with IGN. Maybe IGN hasn't made a statement on it, but if Steamgifts makes it a rule not to put up EXPLOITED(Verb: Exploit: (transitive) To use for one’s own advantage.) copies of Sanctum, then there's not much you can do. No one's stopping you from telling all your friends and giving copies away, but not through this site.

Is it not now? I must have been misinformed. Admittedly those weren't "exploited" (if you can call the Sanctum method exploitation), but regardless we have a thread up on free games, so I fail to see why the Sanctum thread was removed.

Those aren't shady they are just free. Like the air you breathe in. Also the Steam ones aren't free to giveaway, they are free to get. While the others are just free, not because of a promotion but just free. Somehow, some people wants to give someone else something free. As in this site.

Was all legit.

Enter the free subscription, profit from their offers, cancel the subscription and enjoy the games.

The problem is you are exploiting IGN's promo. Same sort of thing as Dark Messiah.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

To be fair, if you have a legitimate subscription you shouldn't need to use the method I posted to get the key; sure, raise awareness of the offer on the forums, but for those that are paying the steps I gave were unnecessary. Regardless, frankly I don't see why we can't have threads about free games here, like the ATI/Nvidia promotional Steam games and the like. From what I've seen this forum isn't exactly strictly on topic to the point of non-game threads, and this concerns games.

There is no exploit in getting a regular account, profit from that site and leave again. If some poeple like their service, they will stay. Thats how you advertise, you give stuff away and some people will like it and buy your product or service.

I really think Cult is overreacting here. I'm pretty sure people at IGN are aware of that "exploit", thus do continue to have the promo. It is legit .-

I don't even know whats bad about a flood of Sanctum giveaways? This site is meant to share games, if you can get your hands on free copies why not share them here?

I gave my copy away to a friend already but I know lots who would share it here. Most of us have the base game already.

Well people creating giveaways out of games they paid nothing for just spoil the "economy" of the site. There is a flood of unworthy points given and people enter every giveaway spoiling the odds for all...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

"if you can get your hands on free copies why not share them here?"

In most cases this is the point that I can get behind, however, in this situation it seems like people could be encouraged to seek out the free copies by signing up for IGN in order to give them here... which promotes point flooding of a superfluous game at the moment.

Anyone can get the game for free, there doesn't need to be a giveaway for it.

Legit keys, generated from the official Keyserver? Absolutely fine. Who knows, maybe the EETS DEV's got a cent or so for every code generated. They should love me then ;-)

Or in the meanwhile, delete the thread that shows how to do it and delete any new Sanctum giveaways that pop up :) It took a while to get Spacechem removed, I imagine removing Sanctum won't be instant as well.

Cult isn't doing anything unreasonable here... you might see me don my white knight outfit if he was suddenly banning every member that submitted a Sanctum giveaway, but he isn't doing that. He's removing a thread about it and removing Sanctum giveaways. Perfectly reasonable thing for an admin of this site to do.

Just checked my paypal, I personally have received nothing in the way of charges. Considering the trial is a free service I don't see any reason why cancelling it should place a charge on the account. It's IGN's blunder for including game keys with a free trial, not ours.

Read his post again. Or this part: "should people forget to cancel."

I understand you not having an ethical objection to receiving the game through these means, but why put up such a fuss over the giveaways no longer being allowed on the site? Or do you have a problem with the thread being deleted? There really hasn't been any egregious use of power in this situation.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Right, my mistake. Well, that's their lookout; in the instructions I gave there was an emphasis on actually cancelling, with a link. The reason I have a problem was because I believe the thread was only deleted to prevent an influx of Sanctum giveaways, when if that's what we're trying to prevent that shouldn't be the solution. As stated in an above post, we have a thread devoted to free games, and mods aren't doing anything about it. What's the difference here, that it falls down to the user to ensure they aren't charged for said free games?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think most of these games come with a key that can then be given away on this site. I may be wrong... but when I got my free Portal, HL2: Deathmatch, etc. it just activated on Steam from a link when I was signed in. I didn't get a key that I could save for later (I may be misremembering here).

I agree the solution should be to remove Sanctum from the dropdown list when creating a giveaway, but deleting the giveaways and a thread re: how to get a free key is the next best thing until that happens.

To elaborate, I dont think it would be fair to ign to sign up for their service then cancel. All you're really doing is showing why we cant have nice things.

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think it's fair to sign up for IGN. Period. Buuuuuut that's why they need to give you games :)

Though, maybe GAMINGS 25 HOTTEST BAEBS is what you're after. Oooh, page 3 of 25, so hawt.

No really... for whatever reason I dislike IGN a lot.

But, regardless of what I feel for IGN I think it is perfectly fine to accept their trial, since that is on their terms, I just don't see a reason to giveaways Sanctum on this site anymore since there is such a lower barrier of entry to get/give the game/points.

I am a little confused as to why my Sanctum Giveaway was removed. I have been a member of IGN PRIME for years now. When they email me I don't even read I just click it. So I got a key for a game I already have. I thought it would be nice to offer it up to you people, but I guess I can see if any of my friends want it. I just find this all very confusing...

This happened when SpaceChem was added to the Humble Bundle. People happened upon legitimate extra keys for games they already had but the policy with Steamgifts is to disallow the giveaways during the offer period.

It's a shame because I imagine certain users who want to give away the key don't feel appreciated when their giveaway magically gets deleted. They'll think twice before doing another giveaway here, I think.

Too bad. Nice of you to try though, KaySakura.

Technically the extra SpaceChem keys aren't entirely legit, since all Steam keys are supposed to be for personal use only.

Can't imagine that was the reason for banning them, though.
