Hey guys,

First, of course, here's a thank you to everyone who'll answer me.

On to the point then; I'm looking for games - mostly FPS - where the whole point is to get on the field with a squad and direct them yourself to the objectives. Look at the list to get a better idea ;).

I for one am looking for shooters for PC, but any genre and console will do, really. My only concern is that any JRPG can be part of this list and there's thousands of those.

Edit: so basically, what I'm trying to compile here are games that require you to control troops. However, unlike a traditional Strategy game, I'm looking after games more like SWAT or Rainbow Six. Namely, your character is there on the field and not some deity (alร  Warcraft, Age of Empires... you get the idea).

When mentioning a game, I would love it if you could tell me the main genre, just how much you control, the console, and the multiplayer capabilities.

Anyway, here's the list. I'll add games as they're mentioned here (if console is not written, it means the game has a PC version):

  • Arma II [FPS]
  • SOCOM (PS2) [TPS]
  • SWAT (series) [FPS]
  • Rainbow Six (series) [TPS]
  • Ghost Recon (series) [FPS]
  • Freedom Fighters [TPS]
  • Star Wars Republic Commando [FPS]
  • Brother in Arms (series) [FPS]
  • Clive Barker's Jericho [FPS?]
  • Spellforce (series)
  • Section 8
  • Operation Flashpoint [FPS]
  • Conflict: (series) [FPS]
  • Battlefield 3 [FPS]
  • Terra Nova [FPS]
  • Hidden & Dangerous
  • Nuclear Dawn [FPS/RTS]
  • Overlord (series) [TPRPG]
  • America's Army 3 [FPS]
  • Payday: The Heist
  • Dungeon Keeper [RTS]

Not much squad based but a very nice FPS, currently in open beta.
Tribes ascend. Its basically tf2 with jetpacks and skiing :D but way better ;)

Actually it's not so much tf2 as Unreal

true but tf2 is a more recent (accounting for turning f2p) and wider audience casual. More people will be familiar with the class system in tf2 than unreal.

Yeah, but the class system is about the only thing in common.

Gameplay is nothing like TF2. TF2 may have a wider audience today, but that doesn't say anything about how Tribes is anything like it. Physics, gameplay, matching, even many weapons are mostly like Unreal. Although, I do believe that it's based on the Unreal engine anyway.

Forgot to mention: Republic Commando is first person and Freedom Fighters is third person.

With Republic Commando you can only tell your squadmates to take up position in certain places and they'll only use whichever weapon the game assigns to that position. With Freedom Fighters you can tell them to take position anywhere.

Despite those differences I've enjoyed both games a lot. R.Commando is a bit short, though.

Maaann, Republic Commando, so short but so intense. One of the best single player fps i've ever played.

SWAT and Rainbow Six - for me one of the best game series, I wish they would make another ones :)

SWAT is an extremely fun idea, but there's too many bugs :(

What I love though is that you're supposed to arrest suspects, not shoot them like any other FPS.

there were lots of bugs but I still loved that game. and yes - arresting suspects was so funny, even though some guys were resisting too much and you just had to shoot them :))

Ghost Recon Online is pretty good, I got into closed beta, but it's obviously purely online so you gotta bring friends.

i see you have Ghost recon as TPS. the original ghost recon has all your requirements and its a tatical FPS
in the vein of Arma II you have both operation flashpoint and America's Army. Personally, i loved operation flashpoint.
Conflict desert storm is a squad based shooter (uses a squad of 4 players). For single player your squadmates AI isnt very good however if you play co-op (even if just 2 players) your squad will be easy to command since each player will technically only have to command 1 bot.

the games that i have metioned are at least for xbox and PC. i dont remember if they have benn launched in other platforms

Checking them out and adding them...

When I'm writing TPS, I'm of course meaning Third Person Shooter. To me, there's a huge difference between an FPS and a TPS. The experience is completely different whether or not you can see your character and even behind him, or if you are your character. This is something I'd like to debate, since most people I've met think there is strictly no difference.

Anyway, I should have pointed this out first, Ghost Recon is indeed an FPS and I made a mistake.

Those mentioned already are excellent examples of a nice squad based FPS, personally i keep playing the Hidden & Dangerous Series, now playing the second, and would love to get the ghost recon series somewhere in my city, also playing BF3, but not that much as of lately...

Haha :)

It stands for Third Person Role Playing Game. Yes, I make a clear distinction between First and Third person. The overall experience about and around your character is not the same at all.

If you liked SWAT4, I extremely recommend to try Payday. It isn't that realistic (you can't be killed by one or two shots), but very juicy. :)
When you face a Bulldozer 1st time, you wish you had the same guy in SWAT4 ;)

Planetside 1 and soon 2, if you're looking for online ones as well. Me and a few friends were a sniper squad on 1, occasionally used Party Vans, too. .-.
