I'm quite curious how you would spot a bot when one wins.

You could be a bot, I could be a bot, the next guy who post could be a bot.

Well, something kinda suspicious in my opinion is someone who says Thanks or stuff in every single giveaway you make, if you make a public "train" you may notice that xD

Yes, but that do nearly 95% of all users. And I dont think every of them is a bot. Wasnt cg trying to stop the usage of bots?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What? 95% of users? Where?
Or do you mean out of the people that comment?

But that could be a userscript that allows entering from the main page or something too.

But doesn't care. As long as ratio isn't good these people get blacklisted.

But could technically be a user that just wants to be polite.

at the moment only TALKING..... no actions against them.... :o(
I delivered around 10 names (reports) with autojoiner people... and a autojoiner group with 3k members.
It give people that talks freely over there autojoiner use and a few are well known (and liked + respected from the most) here.
The user that knowns about there autojoiner using can't say there names because they get hit by "calling out" when they do it...

But i give you a hint to a very high one.....
(s)he -let us call "her" pink rabbit- write to every GA a "thanks" in different languages and set a small emote/picture.

And i know many more, that hide it much better....
and i hope the BANHAMMER will crush all that exploit the system

I noticed that:

  • They post the same comment under almost every giveaway they enter ("xy thanks", "Appreciated")
  • They entered loooots of giveaways in a short period of time. Like 25k giveaways in 1 year membership or so, I'm curious how that could happen if you would enter them manually

25K giveaways in a year is 68,5 entries/day.

This was much easier to achieve before when you pretty much had unlimited points. But stil shouldnt be that hard with the new point systems now if you use all your points every day depending on what giveaways you enter..

I find it hard with the 400P you get atm. Personally, I find it a little suspiscous - cause either those people spent a looooot of time here on SG (I do, and I haven't got as many entries) or they enter everything they find minimum worthwhile (as Mully would say: Idlegifts). These are just a few assumptions that I make, anyway.

Permalink

hi, I fall into that ...
27,466 in ca 14 month

as madsession said, before new point system it was easier to enter many ga's.
but still it is easy to do more than 68,5 entries per day.

I usually just go from giveaway-whitelist, then recommended, then group and last the full list.
the last 20-40 points go into 1-5 points ga.
Having a kind of "ruleset" speeds things up.

yep, I spend to much time around here ;(

Should be done from the support or cg:
https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/0f2Oq/giveaways-trap

Would be very easy to fish a good ammount of the autojoiners.

Others do such things too and i partly too.
All have the same experiences.

So it would be EASY to catch a good ammount....
and i question myself why this not happens...

Would be very glad when you can answer me that question and/or set up a few traps.

Please don't understand it as a attack on you or the other support members.
We (i am one of them) are frustrated that nothing happened, since months, after cg's words...............

If users wish to concoct such "traps," that is their choice. Also, users are allowed to use their blacklists as they see fit. If they end up penalizing people who are doing nothing wrong, that is also their choice. It would be inappropriate, however, for SG Staff to do the same.

We (i am one of them) are frustrated that nothing happened, since months, after cg's words.

We are currently taking action on multiple fronts to address the issue, and our methods are not as haphazard as the one you suggest.

I not intent that you use your BL :o)
More that such/similar traps set up and the ones that looks "shady" then checked with the software possibilities from the site/staff.
Possibilities we normal users not have.

I not think that it is haphazard when you take to the trap/traptext this infos/ways too:
https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/3cVLs/how-does-one-spot-a-bot/search?page=2#uqr2vF9

The rest sounds good.....
we will see what happens in the next month(s)

I say some variant of "Thanks" in every giveaway I enter. I figured it's the least I could do for people making nice giveaways. Or am I secretly a cylon, and that's just my programming?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Timo, you are whitelisted too. I guess because you are nice and I like your ways of saying thanks. But you say variant. That's it. Just pay attention to users entering billions of giveaways with the same line. Just my 2 cents.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thank you. :)

Oh, crap, I just did it again! :*(

I don't really have a way of checking a user's comments in every giveaway they entered, or even checking what giveaways they entered, and I'm not going to accuse someone of using a bot based on how many entries they've made (even if it looks suspicious). I guess I just try to set levels appropriately, figuring that Level 1 or 2 will weed out most of the bots, and Level 4 for a nice giveaway will require the user to have given away quite a few games themselves.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thats a good look.
BUT ... level 4 is infested too with autojoiners and extrem leechers.
At my last public GA, lvl 2, i set, after the end, from 337 that entered around 180 on my Blacklist. A bigger ammount then expected of them are lvl 4. Mostly pushed from software GA's.

But each security measure and each level restrictions helps.

As a hint....
look for the "pink rabbit" that say at each GA thanks in different languages and put a emote/picture under it.
Or for "the wizard" that always say the same thing "much appreciated : )". Each and every time the same sentence and the smile in the same ": )".
That 2 ones are the ones that can be seen from each blind one.
I can't say there names because i got then a 3 days suspension but i hope the codenames help you to find/see them by your own when you stumble over a GA they entered too.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thats the difference.... you use VARIANTS.

Thanks, thank you, Thank You, Thanks :) .... and so on.
The bots use, mostly, the same in ALL GA's.

Very good to see in GA's when the creator wrote in that he not want any thanks

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know if posting the same thanks under every giveaway means that someone is using a bot. I think it's more likely that bots just don't post anything as it doesn't draw attention to them. Plus I'm another example of a person who thanks for every giveaway they enter unless a creator stated in the description that they don't want to receive thanks or created loads of giveaways (then I only post a thank you comment under one of them in order not to spam their inbox). Most of my thanks are simple "Thank you :)" because most of the giveaways don't have any description and entering around 20-30 giveaways a day (or even more before the change in points system) I really don't have the creativity needed to vary those thanks :D If the creator takes their time to write something interesting in the description like ask a question, wish happy holidays or anything, my comment will also contain something beyond simple thanks, but outside of group giveaways it's quite rare to see anything but a blank description or simple "good luck", so 90% of my thanks are copy-pasted. I do it anyway because I feel like creators should know that there is at least one person who is exited about being able to have a chance of winning their game (I only enter giveaways for wishlisted games). And as far as I know I'm not a bot despite my friends calling me an android for entirely different reasons that have nothing to do with Steamgifts and a lot with being organised and having good memory ;P

With the comments i see it the same way.

By the entries i not see it the same way. That alone is not a valid sign.
I am at the half of your example entries and only 4 month.
It is possible to make this withauto a autojoiner and without any scripts (i use nothing -but friends want that i use ESGST and Archis Idle Prog. .... will do in the future.... not know when exactly-).
How it is possible ? Be ill and sit a big part of the day in front of your laptop.
Don't come over 400 points (and before the pointchange used the "unlimited" points very good), enter a lot of GA's (and take the points back when the entries raise too much -to reinvest them-) and avoid the most AAA (Wishlist) Games because the entries are very high.
I learned a few "tricks", as example to search for X copys, level between X and X and such things (and have written + saved me the links to have this ones open the complete day when i need it and be at home). So it costs me not much time to click on refresh each 30 min or 1 hour (when i make a break at my homework in the flat, at office stuff or between looking a movie and so on)

Of course I think it is a joke ....
Sometimes, there are people who use it without reading the guidelines.
Such a wonderful person will be elected. And cause problems.

sad. XD

Translation of guidelines.
I think that it is necessary other than English and Russian.
Although the talk seems derailed, I thought a little.

Also, I am not too familiar with English, too. lol
At the very least, read the guidelines, live with consciousness of words of appreciation.
If you are a puzzle category do not write answers or hints by mistake.
After winning, we will play within two weeks.
Do not forget to push the receive button. (Receiving escape is Bot's companion.)

Daily action is important.

The bots stumble in this trap and the script users that don't read descriptions, because they enter the GA from the "mainpage", too.
Win-Win from my point of view^^

Others have done tests for there groups too (as exmaple Aggro Miezen). With a GA and there should each one write a short comment (not thanks). Each one that failed are kicked out of the group.
That helped against the autojoiners (and hit one of the writers above in this thread... -and he not only hit there, so it can't be only a mistake...-).

The BL have "only" space. Much to less for all the bad people around (i know a autojoiner group with 3k entries and the google app store have 17k downloads by a autojoiner.... and all the extreme leechers are not calculated.... but it give a lot of them)

By the Voight-Kampff Test? (Blade Runner reference)

Anyhow, what I found to be somewhat weird is when an user for days doesn't mark key as received even tho SG and Steam account are shown as online a lot. That itself is of course not real proof of that there is a bot (as someone may not be aware that they can activate key through browser and are perhaps not on their home PC a lot) and I wouldn't withhold key based even on strong suspicion (and would instead prefer if there were a captcha option that GA makers could use so that only those who care about a chance for winning copy of game enter manually to begin with, and/or if there were an option to increase points required to enter a GA (in which case many a bot may end up quickly spending their points on some of the GAs with plenty of points increased for entering)). But in terms of the OP question, whether or not a winner used moreorless bot automatization, plenty of account activity yet no obvious manual input, such seems to me as somewhat implying that a bot is there.

I do asume that (see posting below, reply to Tzaar):

always online
redeems the game nearly immediately
BUT needs far more than 3 days to click the receive field
then your giveaway was not collected by a (decent) human.

No surefire way. The same message in short time is usually an indicator of using a one-click-entry extension or script. Bots can easily be users who you see marked as online all the time but for example suspiciously take until the weekend to reveal won keys, despite being on the site for days before that.
Plus, of course, the entire user list of the AutoJoin Steam group, although they represent only a fraction of the users of that extension. Plus it is the only public bot, there are more.
Another indicator could be 100+ entries a day on average, although it is not a very good way to determine bots. There are some users who really have no life and enter everything themselves.
