I remember reading that there are problems if you try to run the original versions of the Thief games on modern systems (e.g. Windows 7, 64-bit, multi-core processors, etc.).

Are the Steam versions properly configured to work right on newer computers?

I know Thief 3 is. I own it and play it. Not sure about the other two.

They might have some problems on Steam. Grab on GOG if you want be sure works properly.

As far as I can remember they will work on new systems. Can't say 100% for sure though.

I think it will.

If you really want to play it, I suggest you look at the forum, I am sure it will mention any problems fixes

I couldn't get past the first mission in Thief Gold. It always crashed, might be only me though.

Uh-oh...so I guess you're confirming that Steam Thief Gold DOESN'T work without patching.

Hmm...

Wait, what OS and processor do you use?

Someone else asked about this earlier. Check out The Thief Bundle thread for some additional information. It sounds like the games should work, but some patching might be necessary or at least helpful.

Thats why I love steam, the most versions of old games on steam are so up to date that they run on high end systems.

The first two games are super old (released in 1998 and 2000). They have not been given any special treatment by Square-Enix for a digital re-release on Steam.

I suggest checking out the relevant game forums on Good Old Games or Steam.

I've heard GOG's release of Thief 1 actually works on newer computers.

GOG makes sure that their releases work. Steam just releases it as-is.

Uh, not always. They didn't fix the Thief games, for example. Not that they could have, since they have no access to source code. For DOS games, DOSbox emulation allows for enough tweaking to fix nearly any problem that might crop up, but it's not as easy with old native Windows games.

The GOG version has a new installer and there are a few tiny executable tweaks but there's still a whole lot of fiddling around that the average user might have to do because of backwards-compatability issues.

I played all three Thief games last year on a modern Acer lappy with Windows 7. You will need a little work, here's a description to get the Steam version running but it's worth every minute of hassle. Believe me!

No, it bloody well isn't.

The GoG versions work for certain. But I'm going to demand a refund from steam if I have to install fixes for hours and hours to get the game running!
I can do that for free already, since have the retail versions.

well, thief 3 installed and ran fine from minute one, thief 1 and 2 are said to run fine too, so no problems there for most people. also, having to fix stuff for hours isn't new if you look at recent game releases.
