I personally use Xbox controllers - I have 360 and XOne controller, cause I prefer XOne while fiancee prefers 360 ;p

As for making other controllers work with Steam - you can try to emulate using https://www.x360ce.com/ - it does not always work, I've had at least a bunch of game I was not able to run with it properly, but many games worked fine in old times when I was using some generic Manta controller.

if you dont mind using big picture, steam now has its own steam controller emulator for generic gamepads, just bind the buttons and analog in steam config and its ready to use

Does that work as intended nowadays? I remember trying it back when big picture was relatively new and it only worked with a few recent games, also no vibration whatsoever.

i think vibration doesnt work, i could be wrong about it since all my dinput joysticks are detected as normal ones without vibration

It's not really limited to Big Picture mode. It gave that impression because the setup was hidden there, but it works all the time. All major controllers have full support now.

yeah you no longer need big picture to configure it but as soon as you start a game with the emulator option checked it will start the game in big picture and go back to normal mode once you exit the game, at least that was the way it worked 2 or 3 months ago when i used it to play MKX with a friend

Is that so? Currently playing with a controller means playing in BPM, so I wouldn't have noticed.

Xbox controller (360 or XOne). Just plug it in and it works, no further configuration required.

I use wired PS3 controllers with SCP Driver Package. It takes about 3 minutes to set it up.

+1. I use generic gamepad with BetterDS3, which is MotionInJoy but improved and removed the ads and other trash that was with it, plus it's offline..

And my brother is using the Dual Shock 3 on his PC with the SCP Drivers, but with the cable, since I couldn't install generic drivers for the HP USB bluetooth adapter I had from an printer.

^This. I use it over bluetooth with a generic dongle and it works really well, I'll never go back to MotionInJoy and all its quirks.

Xbox controllers are awesome for gaming on the PC, in steam and out of steam. Both wired and wireless (with the dongle) works. Most newer games detect the controllers automatically when you press a button on them and will shift to showing button hints for the xbox controllers rather than the key hints. (Like press LB to crouch rather than press ctrl to crouch, or whatever the buttons may be.)

I use the 360 controllers myself but I hear great things about the xbox one controllers.

I just got mine in an online retailer from my country. Look wherever you usually purchase electronics locally, or better yet if there's a price comparison site working for your area.

I assume the ones on ebay would work just as well, but with significantly less quality. If you do buy from ebay try to find someone selling the original part rather than an unbranded replica.

If you can't get a 360 controller the xbox one might be more readily available, and even better.

I've only used the Xbox 360 controller (I never used to use controllers for my PC games...until I played Woodle Tree Adventures and found it impossible to play with mouse and keyboard). I've never had any issues with it.:)

Xbox controllers are very good. If you never used a controller for a long time, steam conroller is a very good alternative. It is more close to a mouse, keyboard hybrid, very customizable but only usable if you're using steam. Accually you can use it at non steam games too but setting is a little tricky.

I used mouse, keyboard combo my entire life. I bought SC and played Ori and a few games, it was a pleasant exprience.

I got an original xbox 360 wireless controller for a little bit more $$$, and my friends all got the wired not original ones for cheaper price. We all bought at local stores, so unfortunatelly I cant really tell where to find them online. But both original or not, they worked perfectly.

Mine is store-bought official one, cabled, that's all I can help with. All experience I have with unofficial controllers that Media-Tech CORSAIR II MT1507 (attached) is a heap of garbage, almost nothing recognises it and buttons died superfast.

I had wireless Logitech F710 for about 4 years. Its a great controller but unfortunately I broke it into a wall. You could run any game at Steam without any soft issues, it has ABCD buttons, and lower left stick like in PS4 controllers (which is more comfortable to play - fingers dont get tired that fast as in Xbox controllers). I can definetly reccomend it.

It is pretty hard to find a (PC) game with controller support that does not accept a XBox 360 controller and even then you should be able to find a community fix for it. It is close to indestructible: mine has been dropped to the floor a dew dozen times, someone has spilled liquid over it and the controller is still working as if it were new. The digipad is the only minor downside of the xb360 controler, but imo you won't find a better gamepad in that price range.

My link probably won't help, since I bought the controller here in Germany about 2-3 years ago. Just search for something like "Official Microsoft Xbox 360 Wired Controller".
the xbox controllers are compatible with all steam games

I mainly use a wireless Xbox One/Xbox One Elite Controllers with reWASD to use the paddles most efficiently and also to map Controller to K&M.
But i also have the Xbox360 Receiver for wireless Xbox360 Controllers attached for certain games that don't work with Xbox One Controllers.

I got mine from stores because i also have an xbox360 so a lot of them stacked up here. Later i also got Xbox One Controllers and Xbox One Elite Controllers.

Also if you want a wired or wireless one depends if you play on couch and also how far away the PC in living room.

For wireless you also need a xbox360 wireless dongle and for the xbox one an xboxone wireless dongle, the 360 one was sold as a package controller + receiver for pc, the xbox one wireless is available separately.

If you want use xbox360 controller wireless, try t find a such package.

And of course both work with steam, but not all games support xbox one controllers, especially some odd indie games only work with xbox360 controllers.

I have a Logitech f710 (which is like a generic xbox controller) and its okay. I recently got a PS4 controller and the difference is amazing but the cord doesn't like to stay in. Its my only complaint but its a pretty big one. If you have a PS3 controller and its anything like the PS4 one you could probably use it by plugging in micro usb to usb.

For the DualShocks (PS3) controllers SCP driver is the way to go, and for the SEGA ones you could try x360ce to make them compatible with xinput (I do that when I need to use one of my direct input controllers). If everything fails you can always just use JoyToKey.

This instructions are pretty good, you gonna need a bluetooth dongle (many are compatible) and a usb cable to set them up. I have a generic wireless DS3 set to work via bluetooth or cable when charging and it works just like a x360 controller would, windows actually thinks that I'm using one of those, and it works with almost all games on steam with controller support (so far Ys Origins is the only game I encountered that refused to work with this setup).
If you can't make it work properly with the newest version of SCP try one of the old ones, I got it working with 1.2.2.175.
Also, this SCP has nothing to do with it but it's usually the first thing that google tends to find, is pretty great in their own way tho.
