If you were the developer of a game, how would you make your game? 3D/2D/2.5D? Plot? Characters? Inspiration?
I'm taking a game design course this year, a simple one of course. Right now I have no ideas or inspirations on what to do. I'm interesting in some ideas. No, I shall not steal them. I'm just looking for some inspiration, and I've always loved hearing ideas about things from people!

So, how would you game be?

3D, modern-day man gets thrown into a fantasy-world with orcs n' stuff.
I actually had a sci-fi type of story in my head I was making up randomly in my head, but it was pretty silly.

At least you can come up with stories, I'm horrid at even trying to. It turns out extremely corny, or it doesn't make sense.

Well, how I see it is that even the corniest / weirdest of ideas can be refurbished / smoothed around the edges. I didn't really explain it all that well, but basically the person gets into a car crash and is in a, well, coma. I don't know a ton about how this stuff works, so straight-off this sounds a bit silly to me. Into fantasy world. He wakes up in a forest, found by some guy, he turns out to be a famous adventurer etc. I haven't really written down everything and fixed it up a bit and I'm no professional, but it could be fixed up a bit.

Just try and think of the story based off of the world it's in. If it's fantasy, magic, gods and what-not is completely fine to include.

That sounds interesting to me, actually, it sounds cool to me. I mean I know alot of books that tend to have plots where people tend to wake up in a place that's unfamiliar with them.

Another thing I, personally, find to be good help when thinking up stuff ( I call it day-dreaming, but eh )is listening to music that creates a certain feel. If you really want, I can send you a link to a youtube channel that has great music. Helps to create a mood etc.

All, since I've practiced doing all three. :P

I prefer 2D though.

As for ideas when uninspired . . . . . try writing random nouns and pull them out of a hat and put random verbs in another hat. You never know what kind of crazy combinations would actually work that you haven't thought of.

When i need inspiration for my music, i always extract them from my dreams, experiences, or feelings.

Good luck man. Look inside of you. :)

Fuck graphics, VECTORS IS WHERE IT'S AT!

I'm gonna be one of those people who tries to make an indie-game knock off and create the next big hit- ULTRA HEPTAGON! THe game where you try to dodge walls that fly at you by rotating a circle around a heptagon. And in order to beat a level, you have to survive 30 seconds. It'd be even harder, and I'd get Cavanagh to endorse me! :D

If I had the time, skill, and motivation, I'd make a 3D game from Source (I got it started, but I never took it up again). I was actually planning on writing a story about an augmented and/or anthro detective group working on a string of conspiracy murders from the party that hired them. Something like that, I still have to create a blueprint for it.

Whenever I need inspiration, I go listen to some classical music to feel some emotion, then I use that emotion to set in motion my brain to come up with something. Oh, the best time to come up with new things is right when you wake up or take some time to relax because I read a PopSci article about it clearing your mind or hormones or something. Good luck!

It seems you express a lack of creativity. No need to worry about that! If something in you drives you to actually go and take that course then you're probably on the right track anyways.
If i were you i think i'd try to make the kind of games i'm passionate about. There's no use in making a product you don't really support. Do your own thing. Surprise yourself and everyone around you.

Do what you like and don't fall into routines! Experimentation is just as important as your favourite gimmick! There's always something waiting for you to be discovered. And sometimes the most brilliant of ideas are merely by pure accident.

And really the best advice i can give you is to just do it. Make games, make errors and learn from them. Repeat process.

Might also add that you can easily find inspiration simply by looking at how others do it. It's not something to brag about but not something to shame yourself about either. It's simply called learning.

Think out of the box.Don't only play games but read books, watch movies, listen to music, simply think and most of all explore.

Meh, Lame Question. I will never tell you what I think about game design. You will need to think about yourself ! Sadly but true !!

Developers need to, rather than keep their ideas amongst themselves, ask the consumers on what they would enjoy in a certain topic video game,e.g. if it was a horror game.. many people get scared by different things, so ask them and you can get great ideas by brainstorming the public, if I were making a video game, I would make it unpredictable, like doing something that people would not expect a certain event or such as it is based on Hideo Kojima does this with his Easter eggs or boss fights even in the Metal Gear Solid series :D

Skippable and pausable cutscenes. 3D graphics, but instead of "photo realistic" muddy crap I would use cartoonish or cell shaded graphics to give a more unique feel and make the game age better.

Modern single player zombie game where you have to micromanage a bunch of NPCs and try to build defenses. Finding new survivors would allow you to spread out your defenses but spreading out too fast without properly clearing a building can cause you to let zombies in.

you can try this "method":

think in a general concept, art style, aesthetics or something... let's say, steampunk robots powered by demon souls...

  1. develop a little more the main concept, give it a context, create a world, think in a conflict... for the example, we could say that, the human world collides with the demons world, and one side becomes enslaved by the other... this, reaches to a conflict where solution would be the robots.

  2. one time you develop the main concept, the heavy gaming part comes now.
think in what kind of genre could adjust more to that topic. try with the first that comes to your mind, with the example, it could be a side scrolling beat-em up, megaman-ish kind of gameplay.

  3. when you think you have a good and solid concept+gameplay, comes the interesting part...
think, what can you do, with that solid base, that isn't a cliche?... think plot wise, gameplay wise, etc...
a good idea is taking an existing concep, then thinking "what if...", and work aroud to make it work.
continuing with the example, you could think that the mankind was slaved by the demons, well, that is a cliche, what if the humans found a way to control and enslave the demons?, so then, the demons go to fight for their freedom, and they create the robots, powering them with their own souls to avoid the human control... then, go with the gameplay, a 2D sidescrolling megaman-ish game will work, is a classic, everyone know how to play it, it's fun and it's a solid gameplay... but what other thing can you add to it to make it different? first you can think in mixing it with another gameplay, let's say stealth, in some parts of the level you can go and sneak without being seen, maybe the robot change his form to do it, or you can use another character. think what could be mixed, or what others things can you add.

  4. make coffee

  5. drink the cofee

  6. then you have to integrate the main concept with the gameplay, think in the conditions of the world, the kind of enemies, what could work, what couldn't.
for example, if you want to add RPG elements, you must develop a way to get experience, or you can add an economic system, where you can buy new abilities (parts for the robots).
Then think how to integrate it with the world, let's say out there exists a black market where a human merchant sells things to the demons rebels; you have to do the same with every aspect of the world, that makes the world more "real"... for example, having a black market is more "real" than using the money in a store inside the rebel's base, etc.

that is an example of something that you could do to get some ideas, talk to your friends, even if they are not involved in the project, throw ideas in the air, and then think in a way to make them work

All of the advice below, then four months later give up because it's ludicrously complex and make a breakout clone.
