Hi ^^

I'm a multimedia designer and a gamer (like almost everyone here I guess). Microsoft's offer gonna end in about 6 days. I wonder if I should Upgrade to win10 or not. I'm afraid of compatibility issues.

From Win7 Ultimate to win 10 or Not for someone with a lot of old games?

Upgrade
do NOT upgrade

I upgraded from 7 Ultimate to 10 Pro at least 6 months ago. I think the only game that hasn't worked for me is a drm-free version of GTA 1. I'm pretty sure there's a work around and I didn't even think to try it in compatibility mode, so take that for what you will. I share very little of the hate for Windows 10 that many people seem to have. Sure its not perfect, but what version of Windows has been? A lot of the things people complain about can be disabled. I only use my desktop for gaming/ Netflix so privacy on this machine isn't as big of a deal to me, but if you do private/ personal things and decide to upgrade, just do the advanced install and read through every option. Then once it's installed go into settings and check everything under "Privacy."

I like it. I do think 7U is better, but 10 will get better support from Microsoft and has DX12. 10 has been out long enough that I'm sure you've heard the major complaints. If they've been fixed or don't bother you, there's little reason to not upgrade.

Hope thats helpful!

The ability to disable certain privacy and security liabilities shouldn't be satisfactory. If you cannot uninstall them completely, and they are hardcoded into the operating system, then that should be an immediate dealbreaker. Moreover, there are some security and privacy concerns which may not be currently known or which cannot even be disabled. Overall, choosing to use Windows 10 is basically a complete forfeiture of what little control you had left over your technological privacy and security, something that should dissuade anyone, regardless of whether they have nothing to hide.

Win7 diehard... until my motherboard blew up a few months ago. new computer had Win10 preinstalled... and it's ok!

very few issues with old games. Almost everything that worked under Win7 works under Win10. There's so few issues that I don't even remember which games were a problem.

There are many multiple threads about this very topic, many recent. I'll say here what I said there: do not, under any circumstance, "upgrade" to Windows 10 if you are seriously interested in and concerned about your personal privacy and security. Windows 10 has numerous privacy and security liabilities which, at least in my opinion, immediately disqualifies it from serious consideration as an option. There are compatibility issues, of course, though there are also some significant improvements. When it comes to protecting your privacy and security, however, it fails even worse than Windows 8 did.

I would advise not only ignoring the offer, but to actively harden your current Windows 7 operating system while removing the telemetry and other privacy concerns already built into Windows 7 with programs like Blackbird and Spybot Anti-Beacon. If you do intend on changing your current operating system, I would advise switching to Linux while, if desired, maintaining a Windows 7 partition or drive off which you can play video games and ensuring you harden and modify it accordingly, as described in the previous sentence.

It's ultimately up to you what you decide, but I consider switching to Windows 10 to be an extremely unwise decision, so much in fact that I would consider anyone who does so to either be ignorant or careless about their own privacy and security or overconfident in their ability to protect either while too trusting of a government-colluding corporation like Microsoft.

well thanks for your contribution it's appreciate. I'm aware of those security breaches and I know Microsoft will only keep making things worse. At the same time I will lie if I say I'm not interested in that "free offer". Of couse money is not the problem and I'm lucky I can buy a licence later if I want to. My main computer still have win 7 64bit and linux just like my gaming laptop (that I also use sometime for my work but far less than my main computer). This is the reason why I'm only considering to upgrade the laptop only so far. Of course is I like the new OS and if with time going I find really "safe" ways to secure the thing, I might upgrade my main computer too _ but we are talking about months or years here.

Anyway thanks for pointing this out. :)

I was interested in the offer, too, though, I was of course immediately suspicious because Microsoft obviously wouldn't offer it unless it was in their best interests to do so, particularly with regard to their profits—or those interests of the entities with which they might be colluding.

I am highly skeptical of the idea of securing Windows 10 and fixing its privacy and security liabilities, since many of them appear to be hardcoded into the operating system. Though I'm not one to categorically rule out the possibility (thanks to my radical skepticism), I would consider it extremely unlikely to the point that I doubt it'll ever occur, at least to my personal satisfaction.

Though I would personally advise against installing WIndows 10 even on a computer you don't use for personal activities because having nothing to hide is not, in my opinion, a valid argument for excusing its privacy and security concerns, you can always install Windows 10 on that laptop to test it out. I would recommend backing up your current operating system and all its data before doing so, though, as others have similarly suggested, or following their advice to that effect. If you do intend on using Windows 10, I would refrain from engaging in any personal activities on that computer, especially anything which might involve sensitive or potentially criminal (e.g. digital piracy) data you'd rather not monitored or documented, and to only use that computer for strictly impersonal activities. If your work involves personal activities, or you have a habit of engaging in personal activities while doing work, it may be unwise to do work on the computer with Windows 10.

If you decide you like Windows 10 and want to use it to replace your current Windows 7 operating system, then go right ahead. Just be cognizant of the privacy and security concerns involved in doing so and keep it in mind when using the computer. I personally wouldn't use Windows 10, but perhaps you have a higher tolerance for what counts as deal-breaking privacy and security concerns or you don't consider those concerns to be as serious as I make them out to be. I hope I'm wrong about my views of Windows 10, since I'd like to otherwise use it myself, but I see no reason to believe I am, hence my own hesitation.

Good luck and I wish you the best in whatever decision you make!

It's always good to have various point of views on a topic. I'm very grateful you took the time to detail all those stuffs to me. I'll give the new OS a try but I'll follow your advice and not work on it at least untill I'm sure "it's safe". For now I'll only use to for gaming and work only on my desktop. At least there's not gonna be any problem with piracy or such things since all my software are legit or free and open source. :)

No problem. If you're interested in learning about specific concerns with Windows 10, I recommend doing some internet searches on your preferred search engine about it. A lot of it will probably talk about telemetry concerns, but more technical articles will also mention concerns about the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and OneDrive on Windows 10, along with some other issues.

Have a great day!

I upgraded yesterday (with mistrust however), because a nice friend explained me that i would keep the key of windows 8.1 definitively even if i upgrade to 10 so why not try. It took 2.5h to upgrade, i had one full year of windows updates to catch up (i had turned off windows update one year ago).
I remembered to turn off all the spy craps at first installation : turn off, off and off.

Now it works like a charm and my worries about this are dissipated.
Immediately i tried some games with securom or eventually problematic ones. Strangely securom games work well.
Brother in arms Hell's Highway, Romance of three kingdoms 11 (gamersgate version), h.a.w.x. 2, etc. run perfectly.
Was worried too about my printer but with new drivers it's ok.
Install didn't touch to Steam, i got it back as i left it.

I don't see yet why 10 is better than 8.1. It just looks like the same. But it will probably be better in the future.

Only negative point : it's now much longer to start computer and session.

Congrats and I hope it'll be the same for me ^^

That said I'm surprised it takes longer to start because from what I read on other places, it's supposed to start faster.

I think it takes longer to boot because you did an upgrade and not a clean install of windows 10

I upgraded yesterday. I had no technical issues so far (didn't really have time to test everything), but I'm not happy. They went away with the "classic" theme, and everything looks uglier no matter how I set up the interface. No more 3D-looking buttons, everything is made of flat tiles now, tiles everywhere :/

"flat" is the new "black" xD.

id they'd of added 3d-looking buttons and made it nice and pretty and graphical people would then be complaining how its wasting system resources and it did not have more of a classic look.. either way someones not going to like the looks. imo its a pretty good mix of graphics vs performance, but there are always 3rd party tools to jazz it up even more if you like.

3D look is just a pixel (or 2) wide lighter/darker outline, there's no additional strain on system resources AFAIK :/ besides, i didn't want it to be the default theme, just an optional theme you can use or not!

ahh yeah true, just the 3d icons themselves wouldnt be but mere bits worth of resources and not any form of real strain i guess. =)

as far as non default themes they have tons but none come preinstalled with the os, they're all on the internet to keep the os install size down.

I assume you are coming from Win7.

If you would have come frome Win8/8.1, then you would have considered Win10 a true beauty :D

Windows 7 is kinda prehistoric OS. I think you will have to buy a newer OS one day, anyway so why to pay for it then, when you can have it for free now.

First of all you need to check compatibility of your ccomputer. Mine was forced and my PC was not compatible according to the producer.
Secondly, I don't know if it's only something regarding me but I had a lot of compatibility issues with older games (which ran perfectly on w8.1) while newer games like skyrim ran better

I have used Windows 10 from the very day of release, Here's what you need to know:

Windows 10 is a lot like windows 7, with a ton of awesome features, and It's faster.
On the whole Privacy issue: the data they collect has always been to improve the OS (Telemetry), and that concept has been in play since Windows XP came out 14 years ago, and counting. People knew about it then and weren't bothered by it, so there is no need to worry about it now. Also, unlike earlier version of Windows, in Win 10 you can adjust the amount of data microsoft collects from your OS.

The ONLY issue you'll have with Windows 10, is Skype. It didn't work right in Windows 7 or 8, and they still haven't got it quite right now.
And the new OS is 100% free for the next 6 days, so go for it.

My opinion is that if what you have is working fine, don't mess with it. I have no plans to upgrade my own computers from whatever they are currently running. But, if you do go to windows 10, you can install Classic Shell to get the familiar start menu/etc interface. It was the only way I could stand using Windows 8. :P

I do want to upgrade to have the free upgrade, and because I don't dislike W10 (I have worked with it)
But the last legal windows I have is Vista.

Can someone tell me if OEM versions from "games stores" work?
I read a lot in the past and didn't find any problem. But I want to ask here.

I upgraded on day 1 last year. The ONLY issues I had were an incompatible ethernet card driver which I did a roll back on and haven't had any other issues since.

At least lock in your free upgrade and then you can reinstall 7.

My last message about this topic:

I've tried tried TRIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED to upgrade. I always hit an error message or another. I even went the through the trouble to contact Windows's support TWICE !!! no matter what they suggested I've been unlucky all the way. So for now I'll stick with my beloved w7 until something really important give me no choice but to migrate to w10.

I guess when the time comes I'll have to do a clean install ... well I hate the idea of installing all my stuffs again but have no choice.

Have a great day amigos ^_^ .
