Borderlands 2 isn't very graphic demanding iirc

No problem, I think if you search harder you might be able to get an AMD A8-5550M lappy with discrete graphics (Crossfired w/ the integrated one) which should handle all games on medium easily (assuming 720p) at that price. Intel processors are better but currently most games are bottlenecked only by the GPU and you won't get this kind of gaming perfomance at $500 level on an intel lappy :<
P.S. I run BL2 on a similar lappy at all high except physX at ~35fps

I'm actually writing this from this laptop right here: http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-ENVY/E4T18AV?HP-ENVY-TouchSmart-15t-j000-Quad-Edition-Notebook-PC
Yes it's $300 more but it has insane haswell battery life, an i7 quad core processor (the best processor out), and a touch screen (useful for civilization v and some other games, and win8 in general). If you get the 740m graphics customization it's future proof for medium-high setting games. I also got the backlight and 1080p options since I'll be using it all the time in college but these aren't necessary. It comes standard with 8gb ram and 1tb hdd for base price.
If you are a student and join HP academy you get a decent student discount. Also they often have generous coupon sales you can find on here: http://www.retailmenot.com/view/shopping.hp.com There aren't too many coupons at the moment but I got 200 bucks off during a 4th of july sale, and they'll have generous back to school sales in august. Lastly if you buy with a cashback website you get a generous 3-6% refund on your purchase. Using this website you can see that ebates will give you 5% off your hp purchase along with a sign up bonus: http://cashbackwatch.com/store.php?store=HP%20Home
With the coupon, student discount, and 6% cashback they had back then, my total cost for my fully loaded laptop (740m graphics, backlit keyboard, 1080p touchscreen, i7 quad core, and mssd chache) was around $750. That's damn good deal

A lap for 500$ ain't run games on max graphics even now. This means he ain't run them on med in 2,3 years. A PC could perhaps. So eiher give out more money or get a normal PC.

Save up some cash and future proof your machine, also unless it's necessary laptop is a big "no-no".
