I have been thinking about creating this discussion since long.

A tragedy has hit me quite hard. I lost my nephew, 26, to a hit and run. He got into an accident on a deserted highway and apparently the guy who hit him just left him there. His body was found frozen under 6 feet of snow two days later. If only he could have got any immediate attention after the incident...

He was my best childhood friend and one of the very few people I knew who were into a bit of gaming. I still can't believe that a person who had been a significant and most cherished part of my childhood has left us so soon. This incident has left a big hole in my heart and I shall forever miss him. RIP my nephew.

I am not going to say much but I'll just request one thing from everyone who is reading this: don't panic, don't leave the scene in case you are involved in a car accident - it's the right thing to do and you might be the only one who can save lives.

I am sorry you had to go through this, and that there is still people in the world that have to go through this..
There is so many people who don't pay enough attention when driving, some are even stupid enough to do things such as smoking / applying make up / using phone and other stuff..
Its like people are not smart enough to understand they actually into a monster of metal that can easely reach the ton of kilogram, and is propulsed at several dozens of kilometer... just imagine what one fist can do to a face, a fist is small, and goes at an average speed of 25 km/h... yet it can be enough to kill someone or make them disable for life. So please, for people who do that, stop doing crap when driving and concentrate on the road, you can't avoid all accidents, but still, many lives can be saved

I'm so sorry to read that, So young. Such a waste of life.
I lost my aunt to a boating accident with a hit and run as well. Guy in a speed racing boat. Drunk. Didn't even know he hit someone or so he said when he was caught.

There is no justice big enough to make up for the loss of life but the least anyone should do is face the consequences of their actions, and maybe even save a life, instead of running, out of respect for the life they took and the hole they leave in people's lives.

He had just moved out and started his first job. He left us so suddenly and so soon.

Sorry about your aunt. So far, my nephew's case is pending as well... To be honest, I really don't want to talk to my brother about it. He's already going through a lot.

My aunt was already in her 40ies but she was on her honeymoon so it hit me hard. We weren't as close as you were with your nephew but thinking life could just snatch someone away so close to happiness was hard to fathom at 15.

To be honest, I really don't want to talk to my brother about it. He's already going through a lot.

Yeah I'm not a parent yet and I don't even want to think about how it must feel.
Best you can do is be a brother and be there if he needs to talk. And also remember to deal with your own loss. When tragedy hits people we love, we can get wrapped into everybody else's grief and we don't face our own.

So hang in there and try to remember who he was and not just how you lost him. Take care

That's horrible and I'm sorry for your loss :(

My dad has a friend on a motercycle that was hit by a car. The driver sped away and someone else actually came up to his body and stole his wallet and left him. He somehow survived the incident but it just reminds me of how scum of the earth some people can be.

This is a good awareness thread. The thought of getting in trouble/arrested is not greater then the guilt of knowing you could have saved someone and you didnt.

Rip your nephew :(

I once got in a road accident and I was lucky there were some good people around me. The ambulance arrived within minutes and to my surprise, one of the guy came up from within the crowd of about fifteen people and patted me on the back. I looked at him and he was giving me my cell phone which he had picked up from my car. Honestly, the story you have told, it's the same story here as well. Whenever there's an incident like this, people are found to be more interested in looting rather than saving lives.

Sometimes I feel that such people don't even have any conscience left in them and if the guy even regrets what he did.

My condolences, I hope the authorities find out who did it soon. Even if nothing can be done, at least there will be closure and let it act for others to not hit and run.

I hope the authorities at least try to spread awareness among people to prevent any such incidents in the future.

Time will heal... Or so I wish it does. I really loved my nephew. He was like the one of the few friends of my childhood.

I am so sorry to hear that, n3ov, my condolences.

I fear people's flight or fight reflexes are really strong but it's terrible to leave the scene of an accident.

One would certainly want to flee a crowded scene, thinking that the victim will be taken care of by someone else. Doing so on a deserted road... that requires a dead conscience.

Im sorry for your loss :( A friend of mine was in a hit and run. She was pulling out of her drive way and got hit by a drunk driver. She heard them say "shes fucking dead, leave dude" before she passed out. She was in a coma for 2 months before she woke up and doctors werent sure shed ever fully recover. Minus some vision problems and a joint issue, she recovered (thank god), and they caught the driver that hit her.

Another friend was hit by a car walking home on my road. She ended up having to walk to someones house with broken ribs to get help. And they never caught the asshole that hit her.

I just dont understand how people can leave the scene of an accident like that. Its not like you just hit squirrel or something. Its another person. Ill never get it.

I am very sorry for your loss. By running off, whoever it was also opened themselves up for further legal trouble (besides the accident itself)--"leaving the scene of an accident".

It's really bad that someone got a victim of an accident, but it is much worse that the one who caused it does not even call the emergency.
I wish you and the family the very best!
