This is just a cobbled-together small example. We have known about botnets on Steam running 50-500 accounts from a single server, farming cards. Even with 2 cents profits on these cheap cards, a thousand snagged games can mean 60-120 dollars for doing mostly nothing. (And if this sounds laughable, that is half to one month's of full salary in, for example, Viet Nam.)

You can collect them, and if you create a set for a game, you can destroy the cards to get a profile badge, an emote, and a background. Getting a badge gives you 100 XP, and gaining XP can give you more slots on your friend list.
It is a collectible stuff, essentially, nothing more.
