Unfortunately, Canada and the states, among other countries, signed ACTA nearly five months ago

And this is why I give everyone this advice:
If you know of something awesome, DO NOT publicize it all over the place. By this I mean things like posting a publicly-viewable link to it on the web.

Tell that to Reddit. They're like a plague when it comes to link sharing because everyone there is an attention whore and get a larger e-peen every time they do so.

Okay now let's not get derailed on the merits of reddit. We should be uniting in opposition to forces that threaten a free and open internet.

Ok, it seems like it was a nice knowing internet, farewell....
I guess that would be my words if acta would be on full power... :/

Well you know, that site was stealing. Plain and simple, that's not really the problem with SOPA etc. That site was very publicly giving people access to stolen stuff. Big difference.

What you're completely ignoring is that the general idea behind SOPA wasn't a bad thing, it's just the side effects of it that were. It is completely reasonable to shut down a site if they are providing someone else's service for free. Think of it this way: if a person stole the physical manga from an actual store and then started just handing them out on the street, it'd make sense when they were arrested for theft.
I'm not saying that "censorship" is a good thing, what I'm saying is that punishing people who break the law is completely reasonable.

I think the biggest problem is that the people(scanlation groups) providing the service free are not only providing it free, but are providing it much more faster, much more cleaner, uncensored and better translated. (Who wants to buy a product that is inferior in quality compared to the free alternative).
But, other than that I agree that it is reasonable to punish those who break the law. Robin hood totally deserved to die.

Additionally, some professional translating/localizing companies actually look at what's hot in the fansubbing/scanlating communities to decide what series to localize.

It puts on an innocent face and hides behind a just cause, but that's exactly the way they get it to pass in countries.
It's the only foot in the door the United States government will need to indite 25% of internet users

I don't believe that's ACTUALLY what SOPA was about. There's just no way that all of these supporters could see the bill and think "This is the absolute best way to solve online piracy". It seems a lot more like a government bid for control of the internet, because when you think about it, the internet is the only source of information governments have no sway over.
Sure, piracy can be unfair to artists, but for the most part, it was only a threat to the music industry, which really has a lot of balls to try to sell what it does these days and would probably turn a profit if it got taste.

Why wouldn't it be a good way to fight piracy? It goes too far yes, but it would be pretty effective.
Keep in mind that when they combat piracy, they're trying to stop the average person -- not tech savvy users who can bypass any regulations.

I really have to wonder how they justify enforcing a law that hasn't been passed.

They don't use the unpassed law to do that; megaupload was stormed and seized using current laws and applying them awkwardly to internet sharing. If the law is passed, it'll just be much much much easier to put both of us in jail for it, regardless of where we are in the world.

This isn't about a law that hasn't passed.
What's happening now is called a "chilling effect". It's when people are spooked by the potential of a law passing, or the potential of a lawsuit, etc..

It's not really censorship if the government is protecting IP. The entire reason SOPA had opposition was because it defined IP vaguely and allowed for entire sites to be taken down even if only a tiny percentage of users uploaded copyrighted material, even if the purpose of the site wasn't to break the law.
So if a site made for piracy goes down, stop whining. If Youtube goes down, do whatever the fuck you want (this is the idea that prompted the SOPA opposition).

i can't even download my mangas directly from my favourite scanlation group,
now i have to connect to their IRC, just to get the latest chapter,
because the FBI sent them a takedown notice if they did not complied,
i guess this is it guys, it's back to the old form of communication on the internet.
P.S : it's been a long time since i used IRC, i did not even remember how to use them anymore, luckily the guys in there is helpful, and teach me on how to use it again.
Edit : i forgot to mention, this scanlations group is not even located on the US, neither their server.
