Almost all of these are crime films, something OP specifically didn’t express interest in

Are arthouse films okay? It's a little hard to find things that balance lightheartedness and intensity that well.
My suggestions are going to be heavy on non-English cinema, but try The Vertical Ray of the Sun, Tokyo Godfathers, Our Little Sister, The Truman Show, Coraline, the restored version of the German Metropolis, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Wadjda, and The Martian. If you have to pick just one of those, I think the Truman show fits your criteria for depth/coming of age/not too tragic quite well.

Ooh, lovely recommendations!
Girl Who Leapt Through Time is one of my favorite movies, and Truman Show and Tokyo Godfathers are also totally to the vibe I'm looking for. Didn't realize Umimachi Diary / Our Little Sister had a film adaptation, I've heard about the manga before. I'll definitely have to give that one a look. ^.^

Glad to hear it! Tokyo Godfathers and The Truman Show are both some of my favourite films, and Our Little Sister is adorable. I hope you'll enjoy them. :)

I've watched all those (well, other than the three meme-based ones that I don't plan to watch), but you did remind me that I haven't yet given Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 a watch. ^.^
if you can not enjoy a nice animation at this moment, try oceans eleven, twelve, thirteen...

Crime and thriller, respectively, so not to my current criteria. :)
I wouldn't really associate either franchise with "depth", either, especially as far as the sequels went. >.>

I saw Bumblebee today. It was quite good. And it might fit into some of the criteria you are looking for. And, with the exception of one or two things, it is practically period perfect.

He did the producers job, but yes. Yes it is. Less transformers cluttering the screen in the majority of the movie. And 95% of them are G1 appearances, which made me VERY happy. :P

4 up is instructions not included. Quick off the top of my head are "Batteries Not Included" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." One that breaks the rules but I love because it is entirely a genre unto itself is "The Cabin in the Woods." 2/3 of those the end of the movie makes the movie so...

Love Always, Santa. I found it adorable.
Edit: More titles.
City of Angels
A Christmas Kiss II (Better than the first, but the first is also OK.)
Albert Nobbs
Hats Off to Christmas!
A Werewolf Boy
A Man Called Ove
A Single Man

Kinda hard to recommend so broadly to strangers... to name a few I like though:

Isle of Dogs
Blind (Swedish one, and don't read anything about it)
12 Angry Men
The Big Blue
Dark City
Ender's Game
Limitless
Yes Man (and a lot of other Jim Carrey movies)
Big Fish
The Blues Brothers
Something with Bill Murray
Catch me if you can (or other movies with Tom Hanks / Leo DiCaprio)
The Big Short (it was better than I expected)
Billy Elliot
Looper
The King of Comedy
Barton Fink
Ok, that's enough, I could go on for hours

I'll give it a shot
In no particular order
But why can't you have both?
How did I do?
and if you got any suggestion for me that would be cool too

That's a great movie! :D
But a little slow if compared with many movies; and quite deep in General Relativity, it may disorientate you a bit in some passages.

[tl;dr version: Recommend something that is NOT an action or comedy film, crime or war film, thriller or horror film, or overly bleak film.]
I'm looking for a film that's good on [narrative, setting, and/or character] depth (so romance, adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, drama. or coming-of-age would be some of the likely genres) but without getting too technical or overbearing (so no crime films or war films or thrillers or horror or tragedies) or shallow (so probably not too many offerings from the comedy, rom-com, or action genres).
I know that's a bit vague, but I'm hoping you all've got a few pocket gems that come to mind- films that you treasure or recall fondly that seem to fit the criteria above, but that others aren't too likely to know about.
There's no prize here other than my gratitude, but I figure I can't be the only one looking for a distraction today. ^.^
