Idiocracy (2006). Yes, it's a comedy, but it's about a damned serious dystopia that we're rushing to.
A few others that come to mind:
1984 (1984)
Compliance (2012)
The Truman Show (1998), although maybe this one is a bit too "comedy"

I've recently seen Bad Times at the El Royale and Alpha, which I thought were both excellent.
I also re-watched Sucker Punch. Such a great movie, with an not-so-easy to discover (actual) story.

I recommend The Hidden Blade. It offers all you are asking for and it's one of my favorite Japanese or "historical" movies.

A bit hard for me, since I really enjoy dark, overbearing movies... But, let us see...
If you do not mind anime (you shouldn't! :D), try also:

[The Man from Earth}(https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756683/)

Let's go sci-fi then:
Almost all of them are dark to some degree, but it's really hard to find a good movie that's not dark at all.
Also, not sci-fi, but Only Lovers Left Alive, my universal recommendation for anyone who's in search of both aesthetic and intellectual pleasure.

This is an awesome list! However, I'm gonna blaspheme the Sci Fi gods by saying that 2001 is overrated as a stand-alone movie. SO much of the story happens entirely inside the heads of characters, and almost none of that is obvious from the film. As long as you're okay with reading a book as an instruction manual for a movie, 2001 is awesome. If you're not gonna read the book, it's trippy and cool, but you'll miss 60% of what's happening.
If you want something that's gonna make you think hard and want to watch the movie again to get a better understanding, add "Primer" to the list above. It's a great time travel indie movie, but the timelines piece together in a pretty complex manner that's (intentionally) hard to follow.

Big Lebowski (1998)
City of God (2002)
Heavy Metal (1981)
Intouchables (2011)
Dune (1984)
By criteria you mentioned some of those came to my mind, because they are pretty vague, not requiring much of thinking and paying too much attention, also not really specific in genre to me, yet really high quality movies.

If you like sport movies with drama and romance, "For Love of the Game"
If you like animes, "Tokyo Godfathers", its a drama with a little comedy and christmas spirit.
And my last recommendation is "About Time", a romance/drama movie with time travel

I think it suffers from the director's reputation for glitzy rom-coms. Personally I didn't mind his other movies but I know a lot of people are put off by it. And he did a lot of comedy on Brit tv that people don't really know he was involved with.
The Boat that Rocked is also a fun underrated one.

I'm really into horror / weird flicks aaaand comedy stuff buuuuut here's something that is usually "out of my comfort zone". If you haven't seen it yet and don't mind subtitles, I would recommend La Vie en Rose, which is based on the life of French singer Édith Piaf.
Marion Cotillard, who's portraying Édith, is simply amazing. I've watched it twice and thought it was jaw-dropping each time. I've started listening to some Édith Piaf songs after having watched La Vie en Rose. :)

Most of the ones I would recommend have already been stated here. Got some that weren't though:
Some of these border on Drama/Thriller. I think they lean more toward drama so I posted them.

[tl;dr version: Recommend something that is NOT an action or comedy film, crime or war film, thriller or horror film, or overly bleak film.]
I'm looking for a film that's good on [narrative, setting, and/or character] depth (so romance, adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, drama. or coming-of-age would be some of the likely genres) but without getting too technical or overbearing (so no crime films or war films or thrillers or horror or tragedies) or shallow (so probably not too many offerings from the comedy, rom-com, or action genres).
I know that's a bit vague, but I'm hoping you all've got a few pocket gems that come to mind- films that you treasure or recall fondly that seem to fit the criteria above, but that others aren't too likely to know about.
There's no prize here other than my gratitude, but I figure I can't be the only one looking for a distraction today. ^.^
