Thank you for the suggestion. That does look like it does a very nice job.

Fantasy settings, damn, I have something like that but no clue on the name and don't have the time to dig it up. Then again, its normally paid software, and disc only. You would need to visit the Bay or something. Probably have better choices by the time I'm back home.

If you do happen to recall what that was let me know.

Alright, went through my wardrobe of CD burial, and found what I was looking for. I have two discs from ProFantasy Software LTD, Campaign Cartographer 3 and City Designer 3. They seem to have more software as well as those two.

Sketchup.
It has a free version which works just fine. It's a program designed for architectural modeling and designing.
However, note that you will need to build your city from scratch. Unless, of course, you download some models from the warehouse. I've spent countless hours in the past, modeling big cities, towers, and countless buildings in this thing.
Though, it seems what you want is a game, not a software. In that case, I guess SimCity 4 is as good as any.

Either a game or software will do. It's just that I don't know specialized software and so in past games have been an easy option.

The only city builder in a futuristic setting I can think of is Anno 2070. Apparently a fun game, but quite a few Uplay-related complaints. If you only want to lay out a city, just play it in "Continuous Mode". Its successor is also on the way.
Its predecessor Anno 1404 (which was renamed Dawn of Discovery everywhere but in the UK, for some reason) is in a late medieval setting, but no fantasy elements afaik.
For a fantasy setting, there is Hearthlands, if you don't mind it being in early access. But I'm not sure it qualifies as "some sort of program that gives me that ability to lay things out in a nice looking form". :P

Thank you for these suggestions. They're both helpful.

Yeah, that stuff looks nice. It was actually ProFantasy I had in mind when I mentioned "some really nice packages for tabletop RPG players" that are out of my price range. (The core program is $40, and it never really seems to go on sale.)

And seems I was beaten to it :P
Shame I can't send my copies, I don't need them.

They do sell them at reduced prices at SPIEL, the annual 4-day game trade fair here in Germany.
And sometimes there are discounts on things, though I'm unsure if those are only for people who already own at least one of their programms.
Right now they offer a 20% discount on a bundle with Campaign Cartographer 3 plus CC3+ (core program), City Designer 3 and Dungeon Designer.

Probably they attend other conventions.
Just was there Thursday :)

So, for something I'm doing for fun I'm looking for a piece of software that will allow me to lay out a cit. To give you an idea of what I mean, I used to use Sim City 2000 for this sort of thing (specifically I used SCURK), it was easy to use and allowed me to make a nice looking city with a variety of options for types and styles of building (more if I used custom skins). I'm not looking for a city building game to play, but for some sort of program that gives me that ability to lay things out in a nice looking form.
I'm not stuck on style: it can be more schematic like a map or more like SimCity. I also would be content with a futuristic style or even with a fantasy setting.
Anybody have any ideas? (Free, or at least affordable software would be nice. I'm already aware of some really nice packages for tabletop RPG players, but they're out of my price range.)
