Looking for some visual novels with good story and a(t least one) proper happy ending, without much tragedy. Not necessary on steam. Anything knows something that fits? :S

I don't know yet about the second, but the first had an awesome story, unlockable after a few "normal" endings.

That's the sequel, and it doesn't make much sense if you haven't fully completed the first one.
Also, the OP said 'without much tragedy". Which doesn't really apply to Hatoful. ...at all.

Hmm... If you would like to play mix of strategy/rpg and visual novel: Loren The Amazon Princess and Planet Stronghold are both pretty good :). If you don't mind long gameplay and a tooon of stat rising (very challenging) try 1931: Scheherazade at the Library of Pergamum. If you want a romance story and don't mind weak protagonist, go with "Amnesia: Memories". One of better made visual novels out there. Cinders is really gorgeous and Hatoful Boyfriend is just... well... It's beyond anything I've expected, I must admit ^^". A lot depends on what you like and what are you looking for.

Edit: Och, I saw Katawa Shoujo! So much yes!

Hmm, i tried Amnesia but the story didn't impress me, tbh. Wouldn't call it bad but it didn't seem very deep either. I started Loren once but didn't go far, is the story good?

Yepp, generally those romance-only games usually aren't the best in terms of story ^^" With few honorable exceptions. I enjoyed Loren. Story isn't something totally amazing, it's kind of regular fantasy thingy, adventure, gathering party, but there it has pretty good moments ;). And I really enjoyed all of characters and their interactions. I think it's worth playing, at least once. If you don't like fighting much go on easy level ^^.

I enjoyed Cinders.

I didn't play a lot of them... So all that I played :)

  • Hatoful Boyfriend - second (and bigger) part of the plot is great
  • Analogue: A Hate Story - nice Korean VN
  • Asphyxia - really not sure about happy endings. All heroes have British romantic poets as prototypes
  • Soul Gambler

After obtaining the four specific endings required to trigger it, the player is given a new prompt to either "fulfill the promise" or live "a normal life" upon starting a new game. Choosing to live a normal life will result in a normal playthrough, while choosing to fulfill the promise locks the player into the true route or scenario Bad Boys Love, or BBL (also known as Hurtful Boyfriend), which explores the full extent of the underlying plot alluded to by the documents and various points of foreshadowing in the dating simulation portion of the game.

Soul Gambler is good. I recommend.

I'm not sure "Analogue: A Hate" story really counts as "without much tragedy".

In a similar not-happy (but free) vein is "Digital: A Love Story", by the same author. Great fun if you're into retro computing/BBSes.

Of course there is much tragedy in the plot, but most of the endings are more or less happy for main characters.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I have too much games in Steam to play ._. So I definitely won't try in the nearest time. Still a lot to go to 100% new Isaac, complete Brothers, Murder: Soul Suspect and then a lot of other things. And achievement hunting! I'm doomed :)

Do you like otome games? Or perhaps you never played it, but want to check it out? Well, I got a great vn to recommend you!
Don't got much monies to spend atm? No worries, it's free.

Nusantara - legend of the winged ones. It has a great storyline, loveable characters and a decent length at that. Haven't noticed any engrish either, which can take away the enjoyment to a certain degree. All in all, it has overwhelmed my expectations. It's clear the writer has put a lot of effort in it (worked on it for nearly 2 years), and I can say it's on my top 3 of best otome games ever played.

I liked Shan Gui but it's only an hour long :/.
Sakura Angels if you want to laugh at its cringe worthy writing (imagine a horny emo teenager wrote it).
Currently play CLANNAD (on pause atm) and I'm really liking it, though it might be due to the fact that I want to marry Sunohara XD.

Isn't CLANNAD very sad though? And no way I'm gonna believe Sakura has any kind of story worth reading XD

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well I'm 6 hours in and I've probably laughed more in CLANNAD than any other title, but I do believe you are right.

Sakura story is shit. However, I recommend that you play it with the idea that the person who wrote the story is some poor bastard who hates his job. If you do that, then you start seeing all the moments where the game seems like it is making fun of itself for how stupid it is and making fun of the players who bought this game for the 'plot'. Its a bit weird, but if you go into the mindset that the writer hates his job and assumes that you are just another teenager kid who hasn't figured out that porn is free online, you'll have a good time.

Well, at least I did XD.

@Clannad
Well, that art is going to make you either laugh, or cry really, really hard, so may as well laugh if you can..

The art style doesn't bother me that much tbh. I was a bit put off about it at first but now I don't even notice it.
Sunohara is the best part of the game and the main reason why I enjoy it so much XD.

Yeah, didn't mean it as a slam against your personal enjoyment of the game.

Half-serious, though, since it drives me up a wall [in an uncanny valley sort of way] and I have an extremely low opinion of the artist, who basically tried to pass off her sloppy, lazy art as the haute couture of the art world.
I'm willing to leave leeway that something got mistranslated there, but still, eh. :P

The art is definitely going to be the key point for many people of 'will I like this or not' for the game, though, so I figured I'd bring it up, and you gave me such a good opening to do so through a jest.. :D

Never watched the anime (I will once I'm done), but there is something about his honest but stupid way of thinking that makes me love him. The fact that he is constantly making me laugh is the reason why I like him so much.

If you want massive 80+ hour content and a real "classic", go for Clannad. I don't have the Steam version or anything and can't talk specifically about it, but I know it should be mentioned. Although the price is pretty high as well.

While I found it enjoyable, it's more a VN-style sim than a VN. Not much reading in it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's Life Simulation genre, Raising Sim subgenre (colloquially sometimes known as a Princess Maker game, after the most notable game of it) and not a VN, yep :)

It's labeled as a VN/RPG in some places, though, so I can see the confusion.

Regardless of its genre labeling, certainly not story-driven enough to really match the OP's stated interest. :)

NekoPara (because I like cats). It's lightweight, has a rather uninteresting but feel good story, and is basically just a feel good option. (It also has an, how should I say it, impressive physics engine.) There's also a demo for if you want to see if you like it (though it's rather short if I remember correctly).
If you want a happy story, I recommend Planetarian. Yep. Definitely happy. Not sad. Nope.

+1 for Hatoful Boyfriend. It requires a bit of patience though, since the second part of the story is unlockable after completing almost all endings.

also +1 for Hatoful Boyfriend, though for me the "real" story unlocked after about half of the other endings (much sooner than the guide said it would, I was so confused XD)

Permalink

I unlocked and did it last on purpose to get the epilogue right away. It turned out to be the right decision. :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I didn't mean to start it, but since the guide didn't have spoilers I didn't know that that was gonna happen (I thought the choice at the beginning just gave you some extra dialogue/that diary stuff, and you could still get any ending ... and then I thought I got the "Bad Ending" ... the guide said I needed all the other endings, so that wasn't supposed to happen)
Just checked my achievements, I only had 7 endings unlocked before I got that, one of them a full ending of a previous one, so 6 character endings are enough.

Fault Milestone One - it's on steam. It's a kinetic visual novel. No romance, but the story is amazing and thought provoking! Currently there's two stories of it out and for the most part has a happy ending :)

There is also Sound of Drop on steam. It's a horror VN, but it's not very scary. However there is a lot of bad endings (like Long Live the Queen), but once you get to the final ends, they're all generally very happy endings :)
