It can be hard (apart from day 1 DLC) to determine if one is the other sometimes. Personally I can't really say I'm a fan of DLC. I much prefer additional content to come in one big installment like an expansion pack rather than small bite sized DLC.
This has to do with cost, as generally DLC cost tends to stack up quite quickly. Yet it also has to deal with a lot of DLC just being poorly designed. An expansion pack generally forces developers to focus more effort on the content and tend to balance/polish it better than DLC.

There are some games where the DLC files (or some of them) were already in the game and the DLC would be released later. Street Fighter X Tekken had all the DLC characters on the disc and they were unlockable by some method. Those, who unlocked them, got banned from online parts of the game however.
There was also an early mod for Mafia II that replaced Vito with Jimmy (from Jimmy's Vendetta DLC) in a free ride mode of sorts. His head was missing textures and I don't know if you could do some of the arcade missions of the DLC.

Yes. I never been a fan of day-1 DLC or on-disc DLC. Personally I think that's just blindly ripping off the consumer. The funny thing about ondisc/day1 DLC is that Pirates will have access to the content for free/before paying consumers. That doesn't seem fair to me at all.
Also Mafia II not being shipped with a Free Ride mode and charging it as a DLC is just shameful.

100% Agreed. Very rarely is DLC worth it.
Expansions were great, some games still do them, super rare though.

It's too bad when they do create an 'expansion' it's not what it was 10 years ago. It's just a typical map pack put together and slapped on expansion to trick the fools. It's sad really.

Guess I mean current as still like in Guild Wars or Neverwinter Nights 2.
But yeah I see where you are coming from.

Oh boy, so much this. Things like Old World Blues should count as an expansion too.

Depends on how the DLC is done. For good DLC, see Gearbox and Borderlands.

I think s/he means s/he can enter a DLC giveaway without having the game itself. I don't have Europa Universalis 3 and the button says I can enter.

You will note that not a Single one of the games I am listing the DLC for debuted at the $60 price point, in fact, don't quote me on it, but I'd easily wager not one of them debuted above $20. Not to say I'm against DLC for those games, but just saying...
Support the companies ya love, why? Because that's how they understand they should make more stuff for you to buy. DLC provides a valuable service to companies in that it lets them Really see how well a sequel to the game is likely to sell without actually having to produce a sequel. Just because the game sold Great for the first week doesn't mean people liked it as has been shown in the past.

Sorry, but devs who continually work on their games should be able to reap some benefit. They don't make content for free, so why should people get it for free? Like it or not, the old days of free content are over. You get patches free and thats it.

Us old timers don't like change sadly, If its substantial DLC I am fine with it though.
Expansions supported them alright though I thought. Stuff like the 40 weeks of DLC Saints Row 3 thing is madness....

I agree with you. DLC needs to be done well for me to buy it at full price. Borderlands did it right.

You can't really expect a company to continue to work on a game (besides bug-fixes), without getting any compensation for that.
That said, I don't like it, when it just seems like an easy way to cash in, but there is a huge bunch of DLCs, that are totally worth it and sometimes make an only average game into a great game.
DLC in the sense of either a full expansion to the game are great.
The ones that are only 1 or 2 bucks are ok as well, but what's really annoying are the $10 and you only get sth like 2 new maps.
Oh and the DLC flood from Dungeon Defenders is starting to become annoying, too.

DLC are fine, not really my cup of tea but it's ok. I just don't like it when you have to purchase DLC to get some of the achievements and/or trophies. I'm never gonna 100% a game as it is, stop making it harder!

I honestly hate DLC, and see no point in paying extra 5$ since the moment you got the game to get that suit you saw in the trailer, or to have a gun that shoots the same thing, but sounds and looks different.
Oh, and thank you.
