I'd rather take suggestions from all ends of the spectrum and go from there :D So feel free to suggest any and all!

That sounds about right. I just want to have a reliably fast connection for my roommate and I to game on in college.

A router? Or a modem? Or an adapter? An access point? A wireless gateway?

Well if you need everything in a single solution, its the only way to go. I have one, and have to use it due to space, until I instal a wired network or a some coax drops.

But it was more of a comment to point out and ask which equipment OP was looking for since each one is different and a typical customer doesn't refer to equipment with the right term.

What do you need it for? You'll be connected to the school network.

If you're going to be in the dorm, you might want to wait until you get to school to find out what is allowed on the network. Most schools are pretty strict with their networks. You usually have to register your network adapter's MAC address and install software to access the network, which means no routers. Attempting to bypass their rules will get you kicked out pretty quick.
