if you have a lamp at your bed a cheap basic kindle should be sufficient. i got the Kindle Touch and am very happy with it.

Don't get the fire or whatever the tablet one is, if you're going to get a tablet do it properly, but if you want to read get one of the proper kindles with the screen that prevents eye strain.
About two years ago my aunt bought my mum a kindle as a gift.. I don't know how many different kindle models exist but this one is called Kindle Keyboard I think...the right picture shows up in google images anyway, it's a slate colour with rounded edges. Anyway, my mum was studying at the time so she never got to use it, but my dad tried it and loved it so much he bought himself one too. I've played with it and they're really neat. I don't think they're too expensive either, since unlike the tablet ones they cut out all the unnecessary crap. Battery life is good too. They don't have a backlight but you can get a special light that mounts to the front, there's no glare either because of whatever they make the special screen out of.

Kindle Fire HD is not to bad, however it is only good if you want to use for doing a lot more than reading. However if you are looking ar Kindle Fire HD than the nexus 7 is by far better.
if only for reading the others have replied in regards to that

I've had a basic Kindle for years and I absolutely love it. It holds a ton of books and the battery lasts freakin' forever! Its not lit, so you'll need some kind of light-source, but a small bedside lamp is something most people have anyways. I use it at a bistro when I go out for breakfast on Saturdays, I use it in my hammock, etc. Its light-weight and I have a zippered neoprene pouch for it, so its easy to toss it in a bag whenever I go out of town. Fantastic little device.
Now if the book publishers would just get smart and sell their e-books for a reasonable price. There's absolutely no reason (other than greed and adherence to an outdated pricing model) for e-books to be anywhere nearly as expensive as physical copies.

Unfortunately, this is the truth. I'd love to see them do like Blu-Rays/DVDs do now, where physical copies include a digital copy. Sure, some people would just sell off whichever one they don't want, but it would feel like a better bargain for people. I own lots of digital and physical books and they both have their own charm and appeal. I love being able to switch between books on a whim with my Kindle, but physical books also have a visceral appeal.
