Bit of a weird topic, but basically, I've been playing more Civ5 lately, and resorting to random methods of playing. Such as asking in chat, but that can only go so far. So I ask you guys in here, what's the best way you've found of playing the game? Any specific mods? Challenges? Victory conditions? Anything like that, Feel free to explain!

I generally like the challenge of keeping one unit from beginning to end. A hero somewhat.

I always end up doing this by accident most of the time, funnily enough.

Being a pacifist IRL, I always yearn a peaceful approach to any players I meet in game. However, that does not mean I cannot badmouth those who are aggressive, meanie, and not afraid to show how big their dicks can be in terms of military forces. Always make lots of allies, contribute some happy goods (dye, ivory, gold) to those who are strong and friendly, and make them fight while I watch and let my flow of culture and religion absorb their city...that's how I roll.

this whole game feels like everything happens by accident:) On purpose, I tried to pick next moves, events at random...and was progressing without any problems untill I got bored:)

I'm pretty much a total prick when I play Civilization V. I always pursue an aggressive role, which means building many military units and targeting nearby cities from very early. I also try to build many of my own cities as early as possible. This usually involves unorthodox methods like building cities far away from my capital so I have more angles of attack in the years to come. It's very risky, but usually pays off. As long as I'm on good terms with nearby civilizations, I can shake their hands, prepare my attacks without interruption, and then stab them in the back.

I almost always play as Caesar, using his Legion and their extremely useful road building ability.

I prefer using Ramkhamhaeng, be nice with all the city states. War is a no-no, I keep my units on alert at the borders - minimize unit upkeep, more gold = faster science and culture. With only 3 city, I spam all the wonders I could build. When confronting a hostile civilization, usually when they declared war on me, I'm already have more advanced unit that can keep them away from my territory.

Play Germany.
Seriously: build less cities and don't fully annex other cities, this way your culture stays healthy. Sell you stuff for gold and bribe city states. Then fuck everybody with your tanks.

i tend to always play games with random so that i always have to keep my strategies varied. Brazil is best suited for my normal play style especially with their starting biases and the way they prograss but its variable regardless.

If you play Morocco : desert start bias > rush desert folklore > rush petra = you will explode with power (especially so when you have kabashs on all the desert tiles)

If you play an early specialty unity military civ, bribe other civs to start fights with your enemys, wait a few turns then also push for war as this will sparse the enemys army.

As far as my prefered start, if you get 2 stones and a marble in your territory, get the mausoleum of halicarnassus> + stone works and your town will be a production gold haven

Babylon > Rush writing> use given gret scientist as a tile improvment - you dont want too but its much better then the free tech

Shoshones > best liberty quick expand IMO - build 2/3 pathfinders and have each one find an ancient ruin for the free tech and or culture boosts to push through liberty > expand like mad and aim to get messenger of gods to maxamize science income. You'll always be behind but eventually blast through come industrial era

Little tips : (im too lazy to do this myself but) if you switch to production focus when your town's next turn creates a new population, you technically get a production bonus per say based on the fact of how it calculates. SO next turns comes > calcules current pop + new pop > you get that production bonus from that new pop that just spawned as opposed to default and/or growth > then you revert back to what you normally want

Edit: continuation

Ive seen in game someone settle the required 4 tiles away from my friends capital, Because he went honor tree he got a free great general. This in turn used as a citadel to steal vital capital land and because he setled on a hill both his archers in the citadel and his town was able to obliterate the capital in no time.

My favorite strat that i feel ive created (and have used on an irl friend) was that i played as the vikings. Proceeded to make a 4 man army of scouts. Because they dont lose movement when they pillage i was able to run laps inside my friends base, steal his workers and pillage his lands. By the time he was able to recoup his big loss i had already recouped my loss of turns spent getting scouts and went far beyond that

another tip: Early game worker stealing from city-states is a great way to get workers without spending the turns. Go war > take worker > Insta-peace - GG

Ive even seen my friend nuke his own capitol (Back when nukes were an early tech, pre G K?) to stop my mates units from taking it over. It worked.. was hilarious and ill never forget it

really, at the end of the day, your limited to your own ideas and what you think is possible in civ as opposed to the randomness.

Cool thread. City states annoy the hell out of me. IMO there needs to be a way to annex the things once they are X allies for X amount of time. I know there is one civ that can do that, but would prefer in general.

Anyone have ideas on how to have a culture bomb civ that isn't going to take it on the chin for defeating all the city states?

I guess Venice would be your best bet. Much like maria (whatever her civ is again), they can take city states as allies with merchants of Venice. My only vice with getting rid of city states is that it messes up with delagetes and makes UN victories that much easier.

You mean UN victories from your competitors? I forgot about that. What a pain. I guess I could turn off diplomatic victory. :)

both competitors and/or yourself, I just personally think its too easy in general. When i play bots, i always play diety and UN is about the only way i can (barely) consistently clutch a victory. With spys rigging elections and buyouts.. patronage tree and what ceaser's(i think?) patronage perk, it literally frustrates me at the ease of it. Why go science or culture victory if i can guarantee myself a UN win
